Grip Training

I was curious if anyone out there was big on grip training. Recently I started getting serious about hand grippers. It started with those cheap ones from a sporting goods store and eventually I snagged #1 and #2 Captains of Crush from Amazon. They seem to be really helpful for things like chin-ups and dead lifts. Just wondering if anyone else around here trains grip specifically or if it is more popular with the strongman crowd.

I use the 1.5 inch PVC pipe from home depot to do pullups and chinups with. I also have fashioned another pvc pipe by drilling a hole near the end, attaching some nylon rope and attach weights at the end just like a fishing pole. Then I just try to lift it with my forearms alone(you bending at the wrist). Don't go to heavy you can fuck up the tendons.

As a former PL who has also competed in SM I can tell you those hand gripper have proportionally little carryover to either sport. To get a better grip for specific kinetic movements you must actually do those movements. Now sure there is some degree of transfer. If you start unable to close say a 200lb grip and work to where you can close a 300lb grip without question your grip improves. But nothing really beats just holding heavy bars or weight. You can make it more functional by walking around e.g. farmers walk. But if you need a certain technique you gotta do that.

ww.fatgripz.com work great for grip strength, or if your gym has a fat bar. Also, when doing pullups or chins, drape a towel over each side and instead of holding the bar, grip the towel. Other than that, farmer's walks work well, as already mentioned. Also you can load up a barbell, pick it up and just hold it as long as you can. Hand grippers are just gimmicks IMHO.

One of the most effective grip training methods I've used I got from Danny Hodge an old school freestyle and Olympic wrestler when I met him as a kid. The old man can still make sauce out of an apple and break a pair of pliers, there prolly some youtubes of him doing it. All you need is a flat surface and some newspaper. I think it's called "newspaper crushing", you basically just take a sheet of newspaper and lay it flat on a table and let your fingers walk into crushing it.

captain crushers are not very good grip trainers for power lifting training, they improve grapple strength and grip(MMA for example), but very little when it comes to holding a bar

the best thing for grip training (if your goals to hold onto a barbell) is doing standing or seated contractions, simply holding a dumbbell or barbell as long as possible

i personally like holding a dumbbell becoz any dumbbell over 150-250 pounds at my gym has a much thicker grip, so it gives my grip training a good workout

fat grips are also very good as posted above, grabbing something thicker causes the body to use more forearm/hand strength to rotate the wrists forward so the weight can be gripped

hope this helps

OOOO and wen grip training USE CHALK, it makes a world of difference

Thanks for the advice guys. I have heard good things about the fat gripz. Excited to give that a shot as well.

You can also do the rice/sand in the bucket exercise and pullups with softballs or towels..

The only thing I have found that works that helps wt training grip is old plate loaded frame in frame grip device. Those things give me better grip strength than even bb hold outs(like saps described) which are really good.I've only seen that device in about 2-3 gyms in 30+ years. T
