I think he did because I remember a story that he would wear the butchers coat to cover up with while pumping up backstage. Plus he supposedly would do a full workout to pump up. He thought it was better than the normal light high rep exercises. Anyway, here is a pic when he was a weightlifter and one of my favorite shots of him. He was huge and heavy and I believe its when he was training with Jones. Jones said his arms were truly 20 inches taped while the majority of the other top bodybuilders wild embellished there measurements.
Yes, I have seen him pumping up / working out backstage years ago
to guest pose at a show in Oakland, CA. It took him a long time.
The Olympic lifting foto I had forgotten about (thanks), forgot he did
some Olympic lifting while in the states. Interesting. Must have been right
after he defected.
You are right. He was trained by Arthur Jones and by Sergio’s own admission,
he was at his best then. He really thought the world of Arthur, thought he
was one of the best people he had ever met.
And yes, Arthur was meticulous about accuracy and found, like you said,
the majority of bodybuilders embellished there measurements. When
visiting him, as soon as they stepped off the plane in Daytona Beach, FL.,
he would measure their arms. Then he would rest them for a week or so
because most were so severely over trained, they would grow on their
own. Then he would train them with free weights and Nautilus machines
for a while, then measure them again. And they were always larger, better
then when they arrived. Many wrote testimonials to that effect but
alas, most, if not all fell back on old familiar ways of training. Go figure.
The foto below was taken in Lake Helen, FL. where the Nautilus plant
was located. It was taken by Inge Cook who Arthur met in Africa and took
back to the USA with him (nobody was better with elephants than Inge).
She worked for Arthur for the longest time and eventually became his
last wife. A truly wonderful lady. RIP.
The foto of Sergio and Arnold is a remarkable one. Of course if does
not hurt to have a small head like Sergio had, makes everything look
bigger. And it was taken from a distance and with a very long lens
(300mm, I know because Inge gave it to me) to avoid distortion.
