Half Life of Proscar and Propecia?

Recently started back taking some generic Proscar 5mg for hair loss... and have noticed some sexual side effects... namely my dick will not get as hard sometimes. So I cut the pills in half and taking a half every other day. Is that ok to do? I am assuming 2.5mg every 48hours would be 1.25mg? Will it work that way or is it longer acting that 48hours... so I could do a half every 3 days? Also is there a Finesteride topical instead of a pill? I thought about taking Avodart instead of Proscar.. is that any better?

when i did finasteride i did .5mg/day worked great for hair when on T. Did slow down the gains though.

In terms of inhibiting DHT production avodart is better. but it will hinder your gains even more than finasteride and cause more sexual side effects.

You are taking WAY too much. The 5mg dosage isn't for hairloss, it's to completely and entirely wipe out DHT to treat prostate issues.

The hair loss dosage is 1mg, and this may also be WAY too much. In the original study presented to the FDA there was no signifigant difference between .2mg/day and 1mg/day.

In the Berkeley Wellness Letter they sited this fact and recommened people taking finasteride for hairloss should use 1/4th of a 1mg pill per day.

I say: DHT is a great hormone, if you have a hairloss issue, use a topical DHT inhibitor, unless you have extremely high DHT levels for some reason.

The half life of Finasteride in adults is 6 hrs. What you've stated is incorrect, and I'm actually not sure what you mean. Either way your 2.5 mg every 48 hrs probably is giving you what you think. Adjust accordingly.

Wow... 6hours uh? That sux!!! I wonder if the topical would be any better? I would suppose no because its still the chemical. Is there anything out there for topical that would work just as well? Azelic Acid 5% is here is excellent. Nizoral 2% is good. Spiro is good, but its sooo greasy!! Rogaine is more for regrowth right?

You are right and you are wrong. Finasteride may have a short half life, but it actually destroys the 5-AR enzyme that makes DHT, so the relevant question is how long does it take the body to replenish 5-AR so that DHT can rise again. In clinical trials DHT levels came back to normal much more slowly. It takes on average about 2 weeks for DHT to recover after cessation.

SO taking it every 48 hours should be fine.
