Hard work vs genetics & gear... when passion just ain’t enough?

I've been following the author's diary for a long time and I see what he does and I can say with 100% responsibility that what he describes in it perfectly shows why he can't add size.

Don't take me wrong, I've just been in this for so many years and worked with so many people that it's very easy for me to spot mistakes

I envy that amount of insight and wisdom. There is always more to learn and ways to progress, but some mistakes we have seen others and ourselves repeat so many times that they are glaring when you come across them.

And yes, genetics do matter, however I would keep that notion out of your mind. To me that thought is only beneficial in the realm of creating excuses and imposing limits on yourself. Forget the genetics component....and hit every switch you possibly can.

i heavily agree with neutrino on the latter here, you have to just execute and hit every switch you can and it will show what your genetic potential is. It doesnt really matter what you think or believe what your genetics is if you do everything you can, your return of investment will be apparent after youve done it for years consistently 100%. Thats when you could assess what you can do with your genetics, and work ethic.

Do you believe what is holding him back is lack of consistent surplus? @luki7788 im curious as to what you would have him change/do different and what is actually holding him back. That would make a lot of sense vs if he actually pushed up 15-20lbs across 3-6 months and ended up just getting fat or something. If he hasnt been eating enough and given his body a chance to actually grow and adapt properly from hard proper training and enough food, that would make sense. Then its not your genetics holding you back @ OP

Great point. If your weight is stuck and you believe you are eating enough, clearly you are not. Either you are going to grow more contractile tissue, more fat, or both. But one thing is for certain if your weight is remaining static: not enough food.

Interesting thread that highlights the ole internal vs external locust of control aspect. "Oh its my genetics" or, one of my favorites....."I cant make great money cause rich corporations fuck me over and/or I am 'unlucky'".

Apply yourself with ferocity and do the best with what god gave you.

To OP BTW being able to ingest 4k of calories and stay lean says to me that you have GREAT genetics to be lean. If I did that I would be a fat fuck and I weigh more than you.

My appetite is out of this world. Sometimes I am tempted to be jealous of people that can slam so many calories and not get fat. But then I remember what a chore it can be for people like that. Foie gras -style force feeding ugh

Gonna take some heat, but take it for what it’s worth. If everything else is on point, it’s something in your training. For myself it’s always a gut check when I finish a set did I really put in 100% effort with proper execution? Not saying genetics, optimal diet, PED, don’t play their part. Lots of talk on this forum about genetics, diet, PED, but training is barely mentioned and it’s the foundation of what we do.

I looked through the vlog you mentioned and two things caught my eye:

1) You look great! How much mass would you like to gain, what is your goal?

2) You eat a lot of protein. Over 4 grams per kilogram of body weight. Maybe that's the problem?

Training is barely mentioned? Dig around a bit more there is a plethora of info on training techniques, splits, specific bodyparts etc.

Bingo. At some point it comes down math. The scale only moves when the caloric excess allows for it. For some of us that may be 5k calories at 175 to 200lb and others who have a lower NEAT and BMR that could be a 240lb person easing 5k calories.

To the OP- No amount of gear or training will offset someone not eating in a surplus to move the scale. It’s CICO and for guys like me it takes eating a ton of food to keep adding weight. If I can’t add weight I don’t look at my training or gear, I look at my food. Which sucks because I hate how much I have to eat to move the scale, but welcome to bodybuilding.

You said CICO and God damn Greg douchette's voice popped up in my head

Lmao thank God I don’t sound like him or have a YouTube channel. OP just needs to eat more. 😂

Tons of great responses here. No need for me to say what LOTS of smart guys have already said.
THAT being said, when guys come on here saying, "ive tried everything, i just dont have it" 99% of the time they have not had a coach nor do they have crossed all their T's and dotted all their I's.

The most muscular and advanced guys on here THOUGHT they were doing everything at a certain point...and then leveled up. Suddenly, they made gains again. Then they thought they had maxed out. Suddenly, they upped their game and an ah-ha moment happened. LOTS of times this can happen from coaching. You dont know what you dont know. Its that simple. Thinking we are doing it all NEVER is the truth.

If a person is using gear and shooting for their genetic potential then they are setting the bar way to low from my way of thinking. I lifted for many years, put on a lot of muscle then plateaued for a while. I would say that was my genetic potential. Then anabolic came into play and my potential went way farther.

That's a solid wrap up right here

It sounds like you are confusing genetic potential with natural potential. i would assume most people are shooting for their maximal genetic potential? as its the best you could do. You always had the same potential, the tools you used just let you unlock it and let it show itself, bring it to reality and existance.

Genetic potential would be the potential you have with all the tools at your disposal like training, diet, PEDs, lifestyle factors and everything that impacts you results.

I have said it before and will say it again…the longer and more strict I have been the better my genetics have gotten over time.

This rule applies to so many aspects of life. Just replace "genetics" with "luck" :)

Its almost like the 3 magic ingredients of success are consistency, discipline, and ability to push yourself 🤔 or whatever it was Dusty Hanshaw said in his interview

Where is that definition written as i have not seen that. Genetic would a be about what ones genes are capable of accomplishing
