Has anyone here successfully went back to training after rotator cuff surgery?

Fellas I'm very nervous.

I'm a 28 year old male and on Tuesday October 7, 2008 I'm getting rotator cuff surgery (either arthroscopic or mini-open) on my dominant shoulder (right shoulder) to repair my supraspinatus tendon in which 80-90% of it is torn. My doc is going to complete the tear and than reattach it. I work security (I often have to restrain people) so I will be out of work for 12 weeks. I will also be in a sling for the first 6 weeks and my doc will be sending me to physical therapy.

Has anyone here ever had surgery to repair their rotator cuff? I'm not talking about a simple debridement I'm talking about a full blast rotator cuff REPAIR. Can you guys who have please give me some insight as to what I should expect? Did you guys return to hard core training?

Can you guys tell me at what point post op I would be able to start:

1. The 10 Jobe exercises (dumbbell prone rows, dumbbell full can scaption raises, standing cable internal/external rotation, etc.)
2. My regular weightlifting routine
3. Walking on treadmill
4. Running on treadmill
5. Sprinting on track
6. Boxing training
7. Grappling training

Also, for those who had the surgery, when should I expect to safely be able to restrain someone at work (including wrestling, slamming, and punching) WITHOUT having my repair come undone? And when can I expect to be pain free and have my full ROM back?

I asked my doc these things but I would like to know from you guys as well. In case it matters I will be healing WITHOUT the use of any HGH.

I've been putting it off for a few years myself. I've been told 3 months of PT and 6-9months total before back to normal. Make sure you do your research on who your physician is. It makes a huge difference. Good luck

I have the same injury , maybe worse. (90% tear supraspinatus over 25mm, infraspinatus tear with balled up tendon and a labrum tear. I was ready for surgery until a friend urged me to call the owner of a popular powerlifting gym(westside barbell). He said 90% of shoulder surgeries should not be done and gave me a program of stabablizer work, supplement and saline injections. THe idea is to inject .9% saline IM into the area. THe saline acts to create new fibroblasts that heal torn tendons. I also started supercissus at a high dose. I was a 500+ raw bencher before the injury, When it happened I couldn't bench the bar for 3 weeks. Now 4 months later I am benching 225x20 and 285x8. THe surgeon said I would never bench heavy without surgery. At this point I still deal with some pain and weakness, but I am not sure I will need surgey. Then again I might rip it off all the way and be fucked!!! good luck and send me a PM if you want more info. I will give you my number.

Jake, relax bud it really is not that bad. I have had both shoulders cut on...the 1st was back in '97 I was 35yrs and that one was scoped, the 2nd time was in '99 and that one was cut open, to me both are painful for the 1st week or so then it slowly goes away. PT was followed up within days after the surgeries. My right shoulder that was cut open, lately it has been brothering me with some pain but I try and work around it. As for strength and size you will have no problem, I am bigger and stronger since the surgery. Hopefully this will help you out.

I have had My left scoped 5 yrs ago & I gained back most of My strength(not all but I was a powerlifter previously)...but enough to step back onstage & play 2 seasons professional roller hockey

Jake, the doctor is going to do his best to get the operation right. at this point it seems you are worrying about things you can't control. all this is going to do is stress you out and greatly extend the healing process.

i've had multiple injuries that could have ended my full pursuit of athletics and lifting. look at the time off of training as a gift. now you have a few months to develop some other aspect of your life that you never got a chance to.

No problem 100% now after surgery on both shoulders. The one was a full repair for a full tear and the other was done arthoscopic as a cleanout. You want to move your shoulder right away after surgery to get your range back. They gave me an over the door exercise pulley to start right after surgery the next day! Go light for awhile with high reps in the gym. Certain exercises I avoid now after having the surgery that may cause impingement. I don't do incline or decline bench or military presses.

I had surgery on my rotator cuff tear about 5 years back, I would think you could start walking on the treadmill about 3 weeks or so post op. Check with your doc after the surgery. The thing I would recommend the most is to do your home exercises ( the ones the PT will give you ) consistently. I did PT sessions 3 x week and also did nightly exercises ( range of motion, internal/external rotation, etc ) once the PT said I could.

I ended up 2.5 months later with my repaired shoulder stronger than my "good" one-and back to my previous weights about 3 months later. There is no short cuts-stick to the plan they will lay out and you will be better off in the long run!

Good luck!

my training partner had his shoulder cut open for surgury. its 11 months later and his bench is within 50 lbs of where it was when he hurt it...hope this helps, im no expert.

about 6-9 months is right i have had both of my shoulders done at cleveland clinic they have the best sports med surgeons in my opinion I had a bankart repair done on right and left shoulder as well as 5 metal anchors put in my right shoulder along with rotator cuff repair done on each it took about a year to get back to normal lifting again with my right shoulder due to the anchors being put in but on the left shoulder it took about 6 months of pt before i could start light lifting again now im back hitting it hard again You just have to be patient and not rush trying to lift heavy again or you will be right back where you started

good luck

I had calcium and bone spurs in my right shoulder removed 3 weeks ago. Started PT 10 days after, feels good some days; other days not so good. I hope to start lifting again in a few weeks. I had a more serious operation on my left 5 years ago,(subacromial decompression) took a year to regain full stregth and be pain free. Good luck

The doctor who's going to be operating on me did a sports medicine fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic foundation. So I guess I'm in good hands.

2 things I would like you fellas to comment on:

1. What about restraining someone at work? When would I be able to restrain someone WITHOUT the risk of retearing this? 3 months? 5 months? 6 months? 12 months? I have to return to work FULL DUTY 12 weeks post op. I can't go back light duty because I didn't suffer my injury at work. My doc says at about 3-4 months I could safely restrain someone with retearing this. Does that sound right? He said by 3-4 months this will be healed enough where it won't get easily retorn if I had to take down someone. What do you guys think?

2. What about boxing training? When will I be able to go back to hitting the heavy bag full blast WITHOUT the risk of retearing this? 3 months? 5 months? 6 months? 12 months? I would love to get back into amateur boxing again this Spring. Anyone have an idea of when I could return to boxing training? If I remember correctly I think my doc said about 5-6 months post op I could return to boxing training. What do you guys think?

You can't predict what's going to happen if you are at work and get into a confrontation with someone. Hopefully you can use verbal judo to diffuse the situation and get the person to be compliant.

What about my second question:
