Health Insurance

Being a student, I work two part-time jobs. None would offer any kind of health insurance. With as far as I've been pushing my body in the gym and preparing for the competitive field, I feel it's almost necessary to go on. With training and competing, it's only a matter of time before I need medical care (injuries are very severe and common in my sport).

I was looking at Blue Cross/Blue Shield quotes for other companies and a lot were under or around $50 per month.. with a low copay and coinsurance that seems like an okay deal to me, no? What is the coverage like with different insurance companies? Any experience?

I don't know what state you live in, but that is a great price.

When I was back in MA and I was looking into buying my own insurance it was $1300 a month for my wife, my daughter, and me.

He was looking at the rates "for other companies" which are gonna be way cheaper.. But that's with the company paying the vast majority of the real amount, which is big bucks.. You shouldn't be looking at the rates charged to workers at a company unless you work there and they offer Blue Cross.. Cuz to buy it on your own out of pocket probably would be close to a G a month.. Even cheapo insurance on your own is gonna be a few hundred bucks a month, but it may be cheaper in other parts of the country - I just know it's expensive as well where I am..
So Blue Cross for $50 a month is a little better than an "ok deal", LOL.

I feel your pain bro. I just lost my Cobra subsidy from my last job, I can't enroll in my new plan yet and I'm without insurance. I'm getting quotes and it's unreal. It's like anothere mortgage payment. It sucks man, I could own a summer home - or a very, very, very nice Boat - for what health insurance costs/

I have BCBS and with my work I still pay $200 a month. My parents pay outta pocket for theirs (cobra I think) and its like 900 a month. Only benefit is at the end of the year it can be claimed in taxes. Health care definately needs a makeover. It probably cost so much bc your paying for others that go to the doc and pay nothing.

As far as insurance goes, i was a programming consultant for many years and i had to carry my own insurance. if you are looking for coverage similar to what you would get workign with a good company, it is going to be between 350-600 per month depending on what state you live in and your medical condition. I used horizon BCBS and it was good insurance but for me alone it was near 600 a month. Now my company covers the entire amount for ME but to insure my wife is like $281 every 2 weeks=-) Gotta love insurance!

Im in the SAME BOAT! ...so what would you guys suggest be the best approach to getting health insurance for someone who is only part time and doesnt make alot of money right now???

RJ

The company I work for carries bcbs, and has covered me and my dependents for the past 5 years for nothing. At the start of this year they informed all employees that there would be changes to the insurance including a employee contribution. Not looking forward to seeing how much they are going to force us to contribute.
