I count my macros and i am confused as the math just doesn't add up.I have been eating quest bars and the macros dont add up on the bar. Here is the prfile of one of the bars:

Flavor: Apple pie (no sugar alcohols in the bar)
170 caloies
5g fat
24g Carb
18g Fiber
20g Protein

My question is how many carbs do i count? I have been counting it as 6,carb-fiber.Another question is anyway i try to add up the total calories it never comes out to 170? I guess i am just looking for someone to help me understand why? Thanks for your time

Count all the carbs, it has 24g of carbs.

They don't count fiber in the total caloric content.

If you eat them consistently, I'd say it'd be ok to keep the calorie count as is (170). If you eat them every so often, add the macros up and count fiber.

Its all about consistency--if your fiber intake stays about the same day to day, youre fine not counting those into total calories.

It still doesn't add up to 170 if you include fibre or not

5g fat x 9 = 45kcals
20g protein x 4 = 80kcals
24g carbs x 4 = 96kcals

Total kcal = 221

Typo maybe....

Exactly. All the bars are this way and they have about 12 flavors. Here's vanilla almond profile

200 cals
9 fat
22 carb
18 fiber
20 protein

Any experts out there?

There are 42 grams of carbs in my opinion. They just cleverly disguised it by labeling some of the carbs as fiber.

They have live chat and just got a response. Here is what they said:

We are VERY, VERY careful with the ingredients declarations, calories and macronutrients amounts on our labels.

Belle: The FDA requires us to label fibers under the heading for carbohydrate (even though they are not digested as carbohydrates are).

Belle: They do, however, provide 1.4 calories per gram.

Belle: Many people forget to take this into account because of the fact that the energy is not "released" until very late in the digestive process, by the bacteria in our large intestines.

Belle: Here is how the apple pie is break down:

Belle: Protein: 4cals/g x 20g = 80

Belle: Non-Fiber carb: 4cals/g x 6g = 24

Belle: Fat: 9cals/g x 5g = 45

Belle: Fiber: 1.4cals/g x 18g = 25.2

Belle: One other thing that you have to remember is that the FDA has a specific requirements on how to handle "rounding" of numbers and this can also throw off the math a bit.

Belle: This all adds up to 174.2 calories but we round it off to 170 calories.

if there were 42grams of carbs then thee calorie count will be even higher than what he is adding it up to. package says 170 he is getting 221 as per back of package ad mor carbs calorie count goes up further not down to 170.

5g fat x 9 = 45kcals
20g protein x 4 = 80kcals
18g fiber x 1.4 = 25.2kcals
6g carb x 4 = 24kcals

Total = 174.2

This must be how they work it out

24 total carb but 18 are fiber which are only 1.4kcals each and your left with 6 normal carbs

And I learned something today. Thank you for the post.

boy oh boy it would drive me nuts

It gets even worse, different forms of fiber have different numbers of calories in them. Some fiber has zero calories, other fiber has up to 3 calories.

Count all the carbs, it has 24g of carbs.

REALLY?? Tell me it ain't so:eek:

I thought you deducted the fiber content (which is normally 19 grams in a Quest bar) from the carb count, which means each bar would only have approx 5 carbs???

Oops....

Depends on the type of fiber, typically soluble fiber has 2 or so calories per gram whereas the insoluble fiber has close to zero.

I did some reading on it, it's funny how the FDA and the EU have different rules for labeling food with fiber.

Long time no see Miss Q! :)

Lets just Say the 170 and be done with it LOL and K is right different calorie content per fiber. They are basically cardboard bars anyways IMO.

Oh okay!! So, soluble fiber is what's found in food like protein bar's?

No wonder why I started gaining weight after eating 3-4 choc chip cookie dough Quest bars everyday for a week!! That and they have almost 200 cal per bar!!

It has been a long time. Nice to be back!!:)

just eat food.:lightbulb:

Sounds like that there new fancy math. (say it in a southern accent) :D

Nutrition labels only have to be right once. And thats when they get hauled into court.

and mc donalds has 100% seasoned chicken breast

ok am i missing something...its fiber which is good for you. first off how would you gain weight from eating a bar with 200 cals with no oils or from what ive seen not a single bad ingredient in it? doesnt make any sense to me. the bar has fiber and protein basically and some fat depending on which bar. to me it looks like a healthy bar. what am i missing
