help with rest between sets

sorry repost but no answers on beginners board
how long a rest between high rep sets?

case in point
I was doing skull crushers at 20 reps. on my 2nd set I managed 17 reps after a 1 minute rest.
then I started talking to a guy that led to a 5 minute rest. on my third set I failed at 26 reps.
q-
is a longer rest bad? and if yes, why?
or is it okay like I did? should i just rep til fail no matter how long rest is?
 
man...quit overthinking things. just rest as long as you need to catch your breath. sometimes I take 30 seconds, others 5 minutes...I don't even think twice.
 
It should all be instinct unless you are implementing certain rest periods to increase intensity. Then you may want to watch the clock if you don't have a good feel of time.

Yeah this...I generally take longer rest periods in the beginning of a workout when doing heavier shit then lower later when doing more isolation stuff
 
bigger body parts like legs,chest and back 2 minutes. 1 minute for the smaller ones.
 
There is no right or wrong answer.

I personally make sure the last set of each lift is taken
to complete failure.
