Boy, just when you think this shit is going to die down.... BLAM!

Its back:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8788193/

NEW YORK - Rafael Palmeiro was suspended 10 days for violating Major League Baseball’s steroids policy Monday, nearly five months after the Baltimore Orioles first baseman emphatically told Congress that “I have never used steroids. Period.”

Palmeiro became the highest-profile player among the seven who have failed a test under the toughened major league policy that took effect in March, rules criticized by Congress as not being stringent enough.

In a conference call Monday, Palmeiro said he never intentionally took steroids and could not explain how the drugs got into his body. He also apologized and said he would accept his punishment.

“I have never intentionally used steroids. Never. Ever. Period,” he said. “Ultimately, although I never intentionally put a banned substance into my body, the independent arbitrator ruled that I had to be suspended under the terms of the program.”

The 40-year-old is the seventh player to test positive for steroids under the policy adopted earlier this year. Palmeiro doubled on July 15 to join Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Eddie Murray as the only players with 3,000 hits and 500 homers.

Palmeiro said the arbitrator “did not find that I used a banned substance intentionally — in fact, he said he found my testimony to be compelling,” but still ruled that he needed to serve the suspension. Palmeiro wouldn’t go into the specifics but left the impression that the banned substance was contained in a supplement that was not prescribed.

A grievance filed by the players’ union against the suspension was denied by arbitrator Shyam Das.

Appearing with Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and other baseball stars before a congressional committee on March 17, Palmeiro made an opening statement in which he said: “Let me start by telling you this: I have never used steroids. Period. I don’t know how to say it any more clearly than that. Never.”

Palmeiro was so emphatic in his denial of steroid use that he pointed his index finger at the panel, and expressed indignation over accusations made by former slugger Jose Canseco, who cited Palmeiro as a steroid user in his tell-all book. In an interview on the CBS television show “60 Minutes,” Canseco — who also testified before Congress — said he had injected Palmeiro with steroids.

Government Reform Committee chairman Tom Davis, R-Va., who led the steroids inquiry, was traveling out of the country on Monday and couldn’t be reached for comment, spokesman Rob White said.

“If true, this is disheartening news for those of us who believed Mr. Palmeiro was a key ally in our effort to rid sports of performance enhancing drugs,” White said.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan said President Bush considers Palmeiro “a friend and he believes him” when he says he never intentionally took steroids.

On July 7, Palmeiro took part via conference call in a round-table discussion about how to rid sports of steroids with Davis and representatives from the NFL, NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball.

Palmeiro seemed contrite on the conference call, saying he hoped there was something to be gained from his suspension by educating players to be more careful about what they put in their bodies.

“I want to apologize to MLB, the Baltimore Orioles organization, my teammates, and most of all, my fans,” Palmeiro said. “Given my role with the No Tolerance Committee and my relationships with Congress, I feel the need to communicate a serious message to my fellow players and to kids everywhere.”

Palmeiro played against the White Sox on Sunday night, but began serving his suspension immediately and was not in the lineup for the start of Monday’s home game against Chicago. He stands to lose $163,934.42 of his $3 million salary during the suspension.

Orioles owner Peter Angelos expressed support for Palmeiro in Monday’s conference call.

“I am truly saddened by today’s events,” Angelos said. “I have known Rafael Palmeiro for many years. ... I know from personal experience that his accomplishments are due to hard work and his dedication to the game.”

Was using Tribulus!

I have a friend who trains several professional athletes, he is well connected and knows alot of people. I called him this morning and he said that no actual metabolites were found in Rafael Palmeiro's urine, rather he was in violation of the 6 to 1 test/epitest ratio that is in place in MLB. I think he had a ratio of like 10 to 1, which isn't that high. These people won't stop until they can pass a bill to have all professional athletes castrated, maybe then we can get a handle on that terrible killer, testosterone. What garbage.

This steroid witchhunt has gone on too long, the bodybuilding/supplement community should organize a national drive to get any congressman/senator that called for hearings or participated in hearings voted out of office during the next election cycle. All of this is a political smokescreen used to deflect the publics attention from the real killers: cigarettes, alcohol, big pharma and fast food. We need to alert everyone of the impending doom that will follow this massive disinformation campaign that is being perpetrated by special interests.

The sad thing is, if he wasnt a drug tested athlete, at his age 40YO he could almost surely get HRT (hormone replacement therapy) to replace his declining hormone levels. But old athletes must just fade away, I guess. Forget the fact that HRT is actually a health improvment for someone like that and also an great improvment in quality of life. The anti-steroid crusade is much more important.

if this is true then that is fucking ridiculous

palmerio has been one of my favorite players since i was 8 years old and got to visit the old rangers stadium and see his locker on a field trip. I have followed his career and he seems to be a very respectible/kind man.

If I were a pro athlete still, I would use the services of both a Doctor and a knowledgable biochemist. The Doc to give me blood tests and physicals, and to prescribe the test/gh and other AAS's that would be needed. Then the chemist to design proper clearance protocol for me and to provide the needed "smoke screen" chemicals that can easily disarm the testers of their advantage.

The reason I believe my friend is because Palmeiro is rich and intelligent, he hasn't been nabbed up to this point, he doesn't even have a gear type physique. He is large, but not overly muscular and lean. I don't think he uses that much gear if any at all, I think this is a pack of lies made up by someone who doesn't like Palmeiro, nothing more, nothing less.

If anyone has ever read Charlie Francis's book "Speed Trap", he talks about how beauracratic all of these sporting agencies are, everything is calculated, there are levels and levels or commisars that make decisions about the health and wealth or all participants, no matter how popular they are. Ben Johnson was nabbed for using stanazolol, a drug that was not commonly used by track athletes due to tendon issues that could result from overtraining. Francis and Johnson both claim that only foolish athletes would use stanazolol. He was a sacrificial lamb, every other participant in that race tested positive.

I must say it makes me sick to hear these guys lie their asses off and say 'they didnt know' what they were taking. That it might have been some stuff from the GNC. Or I accidently sat on a needle full of juice. And people believe that! I wish someone would 'unknowingly' jack me up to the gills for free!

Too bad Im a huge Orioles fan and a fan of Raffys, especially after this 3000 hit parade. Its so sad. Why cant these older guys be on HRT?

No kidding

What don't they try "I was holding that needle in my ass for a friend" that is equally believable.

One thing I don't completely agree with is that athletes getting caught using steroids is a bad thing for the bodybuilding community.

It seems to me that the two groups that society overall is disturbed about using hormones is athletes and kids. The average American doesn't like athletes using because it distorts the game (especially a game as focused on records as baseball).

In that context, society doesn't like steroids - but only because they view steroids as rampant cheating. In most bodybuilding, steroids are not cheating. So, maybe if these guys would quit "cheating" the whole thing would die down and we could return to the normal state of things.

Not knowing you were taking steroids

I believe Lil Hercules didn't know he was juiced, nobody else though.

WINNY

Apparently it is Stanzolol that Raffy tested + for.
Please, let me know the product at GNC that contains that
so I can 'accidentally' ingest some.

I thought the deal with Ben Johnson was that he unknowingly used the stanzolol thinking it was supposed to be HGH.

Wasn't it an undetectable drug at the time, like Turnibol (sp) and he got Stanozolol instead - I'd be pissed at my source for replacing it

these guys look foolish

I am a Raffy fan but common brother. You know when you are taking stanz. You're busted, suck it up.

He got caught plain and simple... I heard him say that he would be stupid to do it at this point in his career. Well he is just stupid. Didn't he realize that they would be after him big time. Especially since he made such bold statements in front of congress.

JJ Insane: hit me with a e-mail bro... I have been trying to get up with you...
