I know some of you guys have had hernias so I’m looking for a little more info than I get out of my doctor. I saw my GP and I have an umbilical hernia. I’m seeing a surgeon next week. So how long were you out of commission? I know I should start up light but how long before getting back to the heavy squats and deads? My GP said the surgeon will probably do laparoscopic surgery with the mesh so recovery should be quicker.

Another thing I’m wondering about is dumbbell pullovers. I love those and they’ve made a tremendous difference for me but I’m a little worried about doing them in the future.

how bad is it? i've had an umbilical hernia for 2 yrs now and it has not got any worse. my doc said he coluld refer me to a surgeon or we could just watch it. so i'm watching it. it has not got any bigger than when i originally noticed it in the shower, felt like an egg or a golf ball, it's more like a marble in there now. if i'm taking supp's and eating alot it may poke out a litttle more but for now no change so i'm not doing surgery.

It's not bad as far as being a big problem, it's more of a cosmetic thing. No pain, just ugly. It is bigger than a marble and doesn't look good. My doc did recommend getting it fixed. I figured I'd get it done now, get healed up while I'm covered up this winter.

if it bothers you then i'd have it done. i think it's a pretty common thing with us bb's. i hope the surgery goes good.

I've had one for a couple years as well. It's about the size of a walnut. I've recently dumped 20lbs so it's a bit more noticeable. Personally I'd rather live with it than go under the knife. I don't trust Dr.'s. I've been misdiagnosed so many times for different things that I'm convinced most Dr.'s just wanna cut you open and prescribe you meds to pad their wallets.

Last year I had a sore on my ear that wouldn't heal. I had 2 Dr.'s tell me that it was a tumor that required 1/3 of my ear to be removed at a cost of $4K. Both Dr.'s kept squeezing the shit out of it causing it to fester even worse. I didn't have health insurance so I started saving $$$ for the operation. By the time I had a decent chunk of change saved, the sore healed completely on it's own.

Then there was the Dr. that told me that the shoulder separation I incurred in a high school wrestling match required surgery for me to ever play sports again. My parents couldn't afford the surgery so I accepted the Dr.'s word as fate. A year later I started rehabing it on my own. 3 years later I was bench pressing 465lbs and competing in BB shows. WTF???

Personally I feel that one must have a Dr as a close personal friend with a personal vested interest in your well being to truly get an accurate diagnosis and plan of action. Same applies to car mechanics, computer techs, and lawyers. If they aint your bros, you are probably gonna pay out the ass for things you may not really need.

Thanks guys.

I hear ya BigCracker. I don’t like the idea of surgery but it’s also about the size of a walnut and it looks terrible. I want to get it fixed because it sure won’t help me when competing.

I’m going to take my time back into training but after I’m all healed up will it be ok to do very heavy squats and deads?

The longer you leave it the worst it will get it.

Don't beleive the crap when they tell you it's minor and you will be fully healed in 2 weeks, blah, blah. I had my umbilical hernia fixed in Feb '06 - took a full 4 months until it was 100% healed. Do a search here. Quite a few of us have had it done and have posted our experiences. LATS's horror story is hillarious.

Listen to Big A, I'm about 4 months out from having mine repaired and I'm just now getting back to lifting heavy. The first two weeks post surgery were not too fun.

My younger brother, (does not lift heavy at all) , out of commission for six weeks for even jogging, and about 90 days for any lifting. Its one of those things I think, that the longer it heals before strain the higher likliehood of not having complications. He had the mesh done with three small incisions.
