Herniated disc and muscle weakness

I herniated my c6-c7. The pain is annoying but manageable. Problem is it's pinching a nerve, i think the radial nerve, which is putting a huge block on most of my left arm.

I have this limp wrist thing going on because the muscles in the forearm are being effected. I can barely hold the skillet while cooking eggs without my wrist collapsing.

I cant seem to flex my left lat. It just doesn't feel like it's firing properly so I can't seem to really contract it. I think some of the muscles in the front of the shoulder are being effected.

It seems like my left arm is maybe 65% of its normal strength. I don't really feel pain when training it just feels weak.

I'm not really sure how to proceed. All the doc says is take 12 weeks off from lifting.

Has anyone been through nerve and muscle issues from disc herniation and if so what did they do to restore strength in those muscle groups.

It's such a weird thing to just randomly lose that much strength in only one arm. Pretty much the entire arm feels heavy and tired and like it gets winded very easily.

If this is becoming a problem for you you may need to seek another opinion to determine what would be the best path forward. If the radial nerve is being impacted as you suspect then treatment options to lessen the pressure on that nerve should be looked into.

Hope in the end you get relief, man!

Back in 2015 I herniated c2&c3...my left arm shriveled up...I could not curl a 5 pound dumbbell...it took 9 months to heal...to this day I can't turn my head to the left...

I believe @cm went through something similar in the last year or two.

I had a bulging c6 about 14 years ago. I had left arm weakness for almost 3 years. I should have been more consistent with my rehab. Consult several physical therapists and get on a good plan to recovery.

These guys are cheesy but are very good.

I started having nerve issues last spring in C5/6. Their exercises helped a TON getting the nerve pain and numbness to centralize from the hands, then arms, then shoulder, then back to the neck, then gone.

It's tedious, daily work but it does work if you are consistent with doing the exercises.

Thanks for that as I have some nerve damage from a neck fracture sustained in a whiplash a few years ago and should keep these in mind should the need arise. So far the pain is minimal but when pressure is applied to the area I feel some stinging and burning. When I put the bar on my shoulders for squats or goodmornings and positioned close to the area I sometimes do feel it but using a "sissy pad" on the bar helped keep the pressure off.

did you get an MRI? If it were me i would want one, if you are having a bulge might be worth considering decompression, few years back my brother was having cervical problems with nerve impingement and that is what he did, it worked for him, about 6 months ago i herniated l4/l5 and it was a sequestration and that shit floored me, they suggested surgery and i turned it down also turned down the ESI, went into PT and have been working my ass off to get as good as i can, someone suggested the cheesy bob/brad, lol, i started a home program utilizing there vids before i even got into PT, good luck bro! the shit does suck donkey balls.

If you went to a doc I assume you got an MRI as muscle weakness from nerve impingement is pretty serious. What did your MRI say?

Damn so I didn't realize I left out an important detail. So this exact thing happened about 3.5 years ago. During that time the pain was the same but the muscle weakness was isolated specifically to the tricep, pecs, and lat. The tricep was the one that was really bad though. I couldn't even push open a door without my arm folding in.

I saw my ortho and had an MRI and it was the c6-c7 that was bulging along with moderate disc degeneration.
At the time i was doing my own PT, watching some of Bob and brads videos.
It took about 3 months to get my left side to start regaining strength.

This time it feels like the pain is in the same exact location however the muscle groups that are being stricten with weakness are different. Its more so my biceps and Forearms and wrist flexor.

I never had a problem with grip the last time this happened and now I do. But this time my Triceps is fine.

I saw a doc and he ordered another MRI I just haven't went and gotten the new one because I feel like there's just not much he can really do other than PT.

I was just curious about other people's experiences. I think I'm just going to stick to PT and training lightly and see if it gets better like last time.

The progression of symptoms is certainly weird. First it went from extreme pain to light pain and muscle weakness, to now having muscle weakness and a shit ton of tingling in my hand and just yesterday I started getting spasms in like every muscle group on the left side of my upper body

My disc was a bit different had 7 surgeons say I needed a fusion. I followed through with the pt and never did the fusion and I get around fine. That happened in 2008

I would get the MRI if it was ordered. Why not? If you are getting symptoms in a different path down your arm then a different spot on your spine may be effected. If anything an MRI is a snapshot of you in time so its never a bad thing to have especially if your insurance covers it. If you get better than no worries but if not its good to have.

Yah good call. I'll go and get it to at least have a record of it. I think that it might be a slightly different disc this time.

Please get the MRI. Your doctors might have more insight by looking at those images. TrippplePPP gives solid advice. If it won't break the bank the MRI certainly can't hurt.

That area, and more, of my cervical spine are fused. My spine specialist was very clear that permanent nerve damage can happen quickly. I never recovered 100%. My left bicep is flat and my strength is 85 to 90%. That surgery was in August 2015. Get an MRI so you know exactly what the issue is do something about it whether it's PT, surgery, whatever. Don't leave it and cause permanent damage!

When he said "quickly" how long was the timeframe that he gave? I was told not to worry about my C7 nerve impingement but I was worried from the onset. I still have pain in my upper back and neck area when I do a certain flexion exercise but no tricep pain. however, I haven't listen in a month and before that my left was weaker.

You can get a nerve palsy (loss of function) from acute injury to the nerve or chronic compression. But usually it happens with acute injury. Like if a person has a force go through them and a disc herniates quickly and whacks into a nerve or if a nerve gets stretched from a a car accident or surgical procedure, etc. And symptoms can come on fast and strong in certain instances. So any doctor might say watch out for quick onset of things like weakness or loss of bowel/bladder function.

I would not worry about your C7 impingement in a sense that anyone of us could have a freak herniation and have this happen randomly so why worry about this with yourself. Easier said than done but you have just the same chance to have your baseline symptoms just fluctuate for the rest of your life with no worrisome issues. Or, the symptoms could even resolve over time. But if you have know degeneration youre likely to have occasional flares of symptoms from time to time. I am a firm believer in physical therapy in the fact the more you are able to reduce forces going through your joints the less inflammation and degeneration your joints will acquire and this is accomplished by protecting your joint and spine with long/strong muscles...stretching, strengthen and build endurance.

The first time this happened like 3-4 years ago that left arm was bad bad. What's crazy is it happeneed almost overnight. I got really sick for a week or so, like really sick and after I had finally recovered I went back in the gym to do some arms and realized my tricep wasn't working AT All. I had already been having some back pain but I didn't put two and two together yet.

That's when I went and got an MRI the first time. The doc did not like how bad that arm was and did recommend surgery if we didnt see improvement because like others at mentiomed after about 12 weeks the nerve can die.

I did make progress though and after about 8-9 weeks I think most of the strength was back or it was doing significantly better.

It just sucks to have to go through this entire thing again.

What's interesting is I got insanely sick the first time it happened and this time as well. I test positive for covid right at the same time symptoms hit me hard. I'm guessing in both cases maybe the injury caused a weakened effect in my immune system. Anyone else experience this?

The first time I had insane bronchitis and thought that I had actually blew out the disc from coughing. At least that was my theory at the time. I think the disc went out before I got sick though and I hadn't realized it yet. It was my first workout in the gym after being sick when I realized all the strength in that arm was gone so I had assumed the sickness caused.
