Quick question peepz, can high protein low carb diets lead to kidney stones?

Is it true consuming more amounts of water will help from keeping kidney stones away whilst on a high protein, low carb diet,if that is the case, how many litres of water a day are you suppose to have when on these sort of diets? Thanks to those that can help.

One Gallon is what's usually recommended. As for myself, somedays I might drink more others days I'll drink less. Some monsters on this board drink up to two Gallons per day, that's something I could not do...

Not sure if high protein low carb diets contribute to kidney stones. However, drinking lots of water is always helpful, as well as limiting your caffeine. I drink around a gallon or so a day. Good luck!

Yes, drinking water will definately help reduce kidney stone development, and it especially helps prevent and fix dehydration....obviously:)

Higher protein diets 'may' increase the formation of stones indirectly usually secondary to dehydration and low water intake.

Basically, drink enough water to keep the urine solute low, by diluting the urine and increasing your urine output.

Cranberry, magnesium, and potassium will help in certain stone formations, but this is very simply stated.

I wouldn't let this bother you in getting protein in, even large amounts, unless you think you are not going to get enough water in as well. Remember that most protein drinks usually have water in them that helps increase fluid load, as well as either milk or juice, which both also have water despite any of their stone forming properties. Water is your friend;)

i suffer from stones, and it depends on what kind of stones you have. Mine are developed from a high level of uric acid.

I've been relatively low carb/high protein for years and I have no stone issues. I also drink 2+ gallons of water a day.

I agree that drinking a lot of water is always helpful.

High Protein diets can lead to formation of stones, however "we" dont encounter it due to excessive intake of water. Extra vitamin C can also lead to stones, so I cut my Vit C out when on a high protein cycle.
