Probably for lots of reasons, including:

• Maybe other TOP bodybuilders (as in, the ones who have plenty of $$) don't have the desire to go into acting and become a celebrity like Arnold. It doesn't seem to me like Jay, Ronnie, or Dorian have any real interest in acting. After all, there's a lot more money in the sport now than in Arnold's time.
• Steroid hysteria and the public's impression of bodybuilders as dumb meatheads. For example, Kali Muscle seems to get a decent amount of work, but instead of playing the action hero he plays the idiot bodybuilder.
• As was said, the top guys today are too freakish. I say that as a compliment, but the general public doesn't. Think about it, who looks more like Arnold: Ronnie in his bodybuilding prime or The Rock? And while he's no Arnold, Mike O'Hearn is a guy who started as a bodybuilder and now gets a good amount of work as an actor. He looks more like a superhuman than a superfreak. Maybe if he was back in Arnold's era, before the nostalgia of muscular physiques wore off, he would've been a huge movie star?

And I really like Dennis Wolf, but seeing him try to get an acting gig in generation iron made me cringe so hard :banghead:

That's what I thought when I saw it. But someone made a comment criticizing the movie for making him look so bad, and it made me wonder whether he really was god awful or they just edited it to make it look that way. He seemed like a nice, personable guy when they showed him interacting with fans.

It's a different generation. Arnold was cast as Conan 30 years ago, today it would be Ryan Reynolds. Today, Robert Pattison would be The Terminator, and he would be brooding and in touch with his feelings. That's why action movies are now loaded with CGI...otherwise they would suck.

I always thought Arnolds good friend Ralf Moller (pro BB) had a chance at stardom had his accent not been so thick. Loved him in the B rate Van Damme classic Cyborg.

He didn't have Arnold's 'look' but his charisma, acting and overall talent was on par, if not better than, the others that made it big. Not to mention he made ALL of them look tiny!

Arnold always had bigger goals than being a bodybuilder. He knew that bodybuilding was a stepping stone and what was going to be his start in the entertainment industry.

The Rock got straight into " sports entertainment " and used his fame and charisma to land type cast roles ( then scorpion king ) then used his fame and charisma to build on that. He has played a number of roles and genuinely presents himself as a likeable guy.

Arnold did something very similar. However social media was ot what it was back then and different times. Promoting yourself in the 50'-60's was extremely hard without a huge support system. Nowdays every idiot has a youtube video for 15 minutes.

My guess and opinion is that todays pros don't think very farther ahead than maybe a year. They spend all there money on different drugs, trainers, and food. The successful ones are trying to branch out but all they really know is training and juicing. There are of course a few exceptions but most don't have goals other than being the biggest guy out there. Truly sad to see guy like Nasser and Kovacs dead without really a pot to piss in and the only claim to fame was being a top 10 guy in the 90's.

He's the only BB who crossed over into mainstream. And the 2nd most famous BB Lou, became famous only because he was Arnold's Foil. I'd argue if not for Arnold he would not have made the radar to be cast as the Incredible Hulk.

All the other great body builders are completely unknown to the public. Every other sport has multiple, multi-generational stars. BB has Arnold. Who may be a bigger star than them all to boot.

Hm. Two reasons I can think of.

First of all, as far as crossover, today's guys lack personality and charisma. Seems they don't spend much time on other parts of life, maybe? Dunno. There's no one that strikes me as anything more than a guy with big muscles on the scene at the moment. Which is cool, but not much potential there.

What's the most interesting thing that Ronnie's ever said? "Light Weight, Baby!" LOL...Umm, yeah, ok...

Second, other sports don't really "evolve" like Bodybuilding has. Bodybuilding replaces it's stars. The old school guys wouldn't win competitions on the same level today.

But in Boxing, Football, Baseball for example. A great player back then would be great or very good today.

A 4.5 second 40 yard dash is always fast. A hard hit in Football was/is/will be hard. Home-runs if anything, have gotten easier than when the Babe did it. Making his record season all the more remarkable.

Can you imagine Jesse Owens running in 1000$ Nike's tailored to his tread? And getting hit by Muhammad Ali would suck today as much as in his heyday. Imagine him on modern drugs/diet/training...He'd be Mike Tyson with a higher IQ.

Most of all, guys in those sports DID other things, made headlines by saying or doing interesting things, not just getting arrested.

... in arnold's early days his acting was severely criticized and for good reason. i don't remember the exact quote but james caan made fun of him as a big dumb ox. now arnold is much more wealthy and many times more powerful than caan.

funny they both were in the movie "eraser" with arnold commanding the higher salary and starring role. in wiki it says arnold did his own stunt - Arnold was required to fall 65 feet in vertical descent and perform a back flip in mid-flight.

but now we have "expendables 3" to be released sometime in august 2014. terry crews is likeable and muscular but of course doesn't have the "it" thing that arnold and stallone or even jason staham seem to have. Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes and Antonio Bandera are in the third expendables sequel.

Arnold's personality has been unmatched by any other IFBB. He has this kind of charisma and like-ability to him that isn't common in 99% of people. Just so happened he was a bodybuilder as well.

Arnold's got charisma ... talented beyond muscle genetic code. As I watched generation x ... I realized that Arnold was 100 times more appealing than anyone in todays competitive field. I enjoyed watching pumping iron ... I wanted to walk out of generation x.

muhammad ali had a very keen wit and was just a polar opposite of not only boxers but most people. ali had personality to go with his wit.

fuck mike tyson's chances against ali in any time warp. ali found a way to defeat a younger faster giant george foreman. tyson lost to lesser boxers when he had to go past four rounds. the older boxers had to go 15 rounds not the current 12 they do today.
