How do you deal with the mental part of bb

I have been working out off and on (when off usually due to back injury) since I was 16yrs old, Im now 28 I have always had a problem with the mental part of body building example if I am doing flat bench press I will put up 280lbs 8 times and the next week I will do the same weight and try to put it up 10 times but when I get to the 6 or 7 rep I start thinking about getting to the 10th rep and I come to a complete stop like my muscles give out, I know Im capable of doing at least 10 reps but its the whole mental part that I cant get past.
I put this thread under the power lifting section because if anyone knows the mental part of body building its strongman/powerlifters, if anyone has ideas or can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

switch it up. change exercises or get out o the gym and do some hiking or biking. someting to get a workout with but not in the gym. do some sandbag training or sledge hammer a spare tire.
 
When a new 1RM seems heavy, I like to do walkouts/rackouts/rack deads. Take 120%-140% of your max and just squarter squat/hold it/rack dead it for like 2-3 sets of 1 rep.

Maybe you just need to work with heavier weights and revisit the reps later.
 
Takes time to realize that eventually gains, whether it be mass or strength, come slowly and when they do, solidify them and back off to let your body heal and get stronger and larger. Everything in this lifestyle is a roller-coaster.
