How many of you still 'Overhead press' and see a benefit?

What is the reason some prefer the behind the neck to standard oh press? I've heard it hit the side delts a little bit better, true?

These are my 2nd favorite pressing after ohp.. again I lift for enjoyment 🎂

I keep seeing guys doing these but never bothered trying. Seems like it might be a bit easier on my shoulders.

Definitely

Keep your elbows tight. Hits the upper chest as well 🤙

I overhead press twice a week right now, mainly because my pec is tweaked again currently.
Recently did a 365x2 strict axel OHP, working up to 405 soon. Love adding in all variations of overhead pressing.. barbell, axel, Viking, dumbbells, machines, smith

I think it’s the most natural and functional pressing movement. I know overhead pressing has fallen out of favor in the past few years but I credit almost all of my delt development to them.
Also it’s a very fun movement to do. Much better than slow cuffed laterals laying on a bench and squeezing lol

May try this next week. I’m down to bands and light cables right now

You can add a band to these even. Stand on the band and have it over the top plate. Takes a little adjusting but definitely works

This movement is even better doing high reps.

No I meant bands as in a band only movement.
Like side laterals w one end of the band affixed at ground level

Ya I get that. I just ment if you wanted to reduce the amount of weight for the exercise adding a band works to

Ah ok 👍🏻

It’s not so much the weight that had me abandon OH presses. Combo of the amount of warmup to get going, the joint soreness for days after, and seemingly no extra payoff for me in terms of hypertrophy vs lighter isolated movements.

Smith machines are hard to come by. My gym is the same, I have to do my workout in the order of which workout stations open up. Its never the same.

I switched over to the hammer strength shoulder press with decent results but I dont feel the same engagement in the shoulder that I do with lateral raises and face pulls.

Hawkmoon suggested something similar to what you are saying so if I can get a smith machine and the bench I'll put them back in the rotation.
Yea man it’s a Mission to find one open so I just move on to do something else because I don’t want to wait and loose the pump I have going

If I could, I would. I had to stop doing them sometime around the pandemic. I miss free weight pressing 225 for 10 to 15. I can no longer incline press either. Back then, my shoulder to waste ratio was pretty darn good. Somehow, I’m hanging in there with lots of lateral raises.
For me, squats, deadlifts, incline, and military presses did the trick.
Now I have a shoulder that needs to be replaced. So I’m putting it off with hopes that better technology will come in a few years..

You want some cheese with that wine Mr 😶‍🌫️

Lol ya bro.. I start warming up the minute I roll out of bed. Then usually training at night

I see a lot of you use smith machines. I stay away from them like the plague. Sure way to fuck up your joints.
The body motions are arcs, not straight lines. Smith machines force the joints to move unnaturally.

I occasionally may even throw in some shoulder presses sat on the floor. I am very basic in my training but I have tried everything you can think of. I scan through IG so see all the new ideas from the various fitness influencers. Most of the stuff is just complicating something basic but occasionally I will like the feel of a movement and this was one. It's basically just taking your legs out of the movement. I get a bench and work up to 2 x 20kg plates (1 stacked on the other). Sat on the floor but the key is having each leg flat on the floor so you can't use any momentum. Just press a plate up in front of you (scapular plain) and I go up to 2 plates which is hard for this especially when you move slow.
