My hct is .555 , how much can I expect it to drop by giving blood once ?

I think they take 490mls of blood ?

In my experience my H/H falls to normal with 1 pint of blood. I believe 1 pint of blood is close to half a liter or 500ml

Depends. I have had it drop 2-3pts and I have had it only drop 1.
Hemotologist told me over 50 you are twice as likely to have a heart attack or stroke. over 55 goes to triple the threat.
You can also limit your iron intake and drink a lot of water. Dropping from 55 it will take more than just 1 or 2 weeks and 1 pint of blood to get you below 50.

yikes . . .

My experience (and mine has never been that high) is that
it takes multiple donations bring about a significant,
meaningful drop in hematocrit.

Also, hydration, that is being well hydrated plays a huge part.
I do not think that there is hard and fast “rule” as to how
much it will drop with each donation. Like they say, your
mileage may vary. Just be consistent, keep well hydrated,
not just pre and post donation / blood test, but always.

I say blood test, because that is really where hydration can
make a difference in test results. (Hydration will also drop
the amount of time it takes to give a pint of blood. The
“record” I hear is ~ 3 minutes, and she was extremely well
hydrated. I take about ~9 minutes.)

Yours is very high and that is not a good sign. I would
definitely do something about, what I don’t know but
giving blood would not be a bad place to start. I wish
you all the best getting this under control.

Cheers guys . I dont know if they will definately want my blood when my hct is high ?

I spoke to my Dr about my my crit being 52. I asked him if giving blood helped and he said no not really. He said one pint of blood every eight weeks is not going to change your over all crit levels. he said in 2-3 weeks your levels will be right back to whatever you normaly are. He said you would have to give many pints for it really help lower and keep it low.

I don't know where your Doc got those figures, but from all the research I have done, high hematocrit is not related to blood clot caused heart attacks. Every medical site I have been to dosen't even mention blood clot induced heart attacks when discussing high hematocrit. There is another component to the blood called platelets. Platelets and blood clotting factors that circulate in the blood are responsible for clotting. Hematocrit refers to the clumping together of red blood cells. Red blood cells do not appear to have any major role in the clotting of the blood. Aspirin has no effect on red blood cells. Aspirin acts on platelets by making them less sticky and interfering with their ability to form clots. Platelets are actually fragments of other cells and have a life of from 8 to 12 days. What really puts you at risk is if you have a blood clotting disorder or have a family history of blood clots. This info is from a number of different medical sites. I would like to have someone show me info from a site that says high hematocrit is directly related to blood clot induced heart attacks.

Do the math. The average male has 14 to 16 pints of blood. They take 1 pint, it drops your HCT by 1/14 to 1/16 its number at the time you donated once the plasma is replaced which only takes 24 to 48 hours. Of course, RBC's are going to slowly build up again over time.

I don't know about the doc saying it doesn't lower it at all. It seems like the only logical thing that could happen.

Anybody ever heard anything to back that docs comments up?

giving blood tomorrow, so if i'm gonna get poked by that damn 16g it better be worth it

This is completely false. I know from personal experience that consistant donation over time lowers HCT. Just over the last three donations since May, my HCT has gone from 54 to 49 to 46. All other variables are consistant. Its hardly a double-blind study use your logic here. You guys who value doctors opinions so much have to realize that most medical doctors are incredibly ignorant when it comes to this stuff. Its just not their focus. Their concern is prescribing drugs to mask symptoms and imagined diseases.

Well , I was honest about steroids and they won't take my blood .

I think il be getting reffurred to a blood specialist

My hct has fluctuated around the .5 mark for a couple years and certain things seem to push it over .

i started a thread a couple of weeks ago when i donated blood for the first time and my hematocrit was 58-well i donated again about 2 weeks ago and it was only 50-so for me it dropped substantially in only 2 months

I can speak from my blood work. I give blood every 12 weeks. My crit always hovers around 52. Before i touched aas my crit was 49. I recently went 20 weeks without givimg blood and my crit was 51. I was dehydrated when it was 51. I was fully hydrated and the next day my crit was 49. After that i went and gave blood again and had blood work 3 weeks after and my crit was again 52. The dr asked me if i gave blood because he said a lot of my rbc's were small and inmature which is what happens after you give blood. Your body replaces the lost rbc's.

So that is my exp. In my mind it matches what my dr told me. Like everything else on the web take it with a grain of salt.

Low Ferritin - High Hematocrit

Sorry to jack this old thread, but I have a similar issue.

My Ferritin has always been low, but they don't really know why. Donating blood will drop this into the teens or less. I'm not menstruating and I eat a decent amount of dead animals. The problem is that my Hematocrit gets too high, so I donate blood to keep it lower. If it gets above 50, it starts to bother my blood pressure.

At my recent donation, Hematocrit was 52, Hemoglobin was 179 and no idea about my Ferritin levels.

So I'm on iron supplements for life, although I'm not great about taking them. I'd like to keep my Hematocrit lower, as blood donations alone don't seem to do it for me.

I've read that Green Tea can lower Hematocrit, is this BS? Will it affect my Ferritin levels?
