how much did big pharma pay for the new "guidelines"?

i just saw this on cnn...

sad,sad,sad...

sick people need to lower their cholesterol, but nobody gives a shit enough to actually change their lifestyle...

the older I get the more I find americans to be gross.

I don't disagree, but imagine what they think of us pumping some of this shit into our bodies. They probably think we are more than "gross", like "fucked in the head" :)

Good point MG
I been waitin on the results of sum blood work goin to bed at nite terrified that somethin would be wrong and I had to stop jucin
Thats messed up!
oh well at least I aint fat lol

I don't know why they are still pushing the cholesterol issue other than to cash in on the uninformed. C-reactive protein and homocystiene levels are much more indicative of one's cardiac status.

Yeah, my dad just got a new cholesterol drug pushed on him, but refused to take it. His Cholesterol was 180's, now 140's (cleaned up his diet a bit), and the doc told him they want it at 100(?)

He's 75, 6 feet, about 190 (so, not fat at all) trains 4-5x a week and has been for decades. Sounds fishy to me.

Just another scam form the Pharmacy companies pushing drugs on us that cost more then any other country. Notice how quick Doctor's prescribe Drugs to you now a days that are popular on TV? Yes, they do get incentives to prescribe these too. I tend to shake my head anymore at the FDA, like they are really out for our interest or health.

when my parents returned from overseas...my moms new doctor tried to put her on a statin drug...without even giving her a blood test.

she got a new doc right away.

I know a book that might interest you.

You guys ever go to a doctor's office and see the reps from the pharmaceutical companies there hanging out like cockroaches trying to get the doctor to prescribe their shit regardless of if the patient needs it or not.

Back in the day people went to doctors and thought of them as someone who actually cares for their health. Now they are like used car salesmen trying to get you to take drugs, get tests done etc just to line their pockets up. Its sad.

With many drugs becoming generic they are pushing more and more for new guidelines which means new, expensive drugs.

How many american's are stupid enough to think that cholesterol still means fucking anything?

It really is sad. Next month the new blood pressure guidelines will be 100/60:rolleyes:

Get the book:

The cholesterol myth

Written by a doc who use to push statins for years until he figured out how bad they r for u!

He said for every 100 people who use statins it actually only helps 1 out of those 100

I love my Dr he is all about wellness and quality of life, if he's pushing anything its lowdose everyday cialis geared more towards the bph aspect or reg cialis/viagra, HRT/TRT for both men and women to include full spectrum for both genders... test, hgh, thyroid (prefers the dissected armor thyroid like prods over synthetics since better bioavailabilty) estro and other menopausal treatments even if is low dose anti-depressants like welbutrin etc to get things optimal and quality of life high... he personally isnt a fan of statins but if someone is just out of control levels then will consider but also look at alternative methods to address issue from just not one aspect.. got to say I lucked out finding an older aged male dr not so narrow minded and ignorant trying to push medicine theories that came from medical books written back in the 60s 70s etc.. he regularly attends various seminars to keep current on leading advancements in the medical field of all aspects being a general practicioner and always keeps an open mind that even in medicine its all trial and error on the individual and their bodies make up.including how various factors like hereditary issues can sway one person just as different as another , so very grateful I have a dr like that.. definitely a hard find especially after all the horror stories from everybody both on/off the boards just how ignorant some dr can be as if medicine doesnt evolve as technology and science advance over time...

It's going to get a lot worse too. Doctors are going to be required to see more patients, resulting in less diagnosis' and more pill pushing. There are some docs who take the time to get to the root of the problem, but most just try to get you in and out. A good doctor is extremely hard to find, it's just become easier to prescribe something than actually figure out the cause of the symptoms. But that is the culture in America, treat the symptom not the cause.

The FDA is run by doctors who are heavily invested in these pharmaceutical companies. The largest lobby in the US is the pharmaceutical lobby, for good reason. They want people to be reliant on their drugs. A change in diet will reverse many issues that people face, but they would rather take a pill to achieve results. Then take another to offset the sides of that one and so on

Only one company pushed for this change, the remainder of big pharma has no incentive

Pfizer's patent on Lipitor ran and the patent for Zocor and other statins have expired as well.
What this means is that they are widely available as generics for about 11 cents a day.
The only statin med under patent protection is AstraZeneca’s Crestor, which had sales of $8.3 billion in 2012.

With many drugs becoming generic they are pushing more and more for new guidelines which means new, expensive drugs.

new guidelines will provide opportunity to create new formulas which will qualify for patent protection and another 17 years of bliss for the formulator

I agree with richiec and add....

yes doctors and even worse, lawyers, of the 26 or so associate and deputy commissioners, and other heads of this organization, 10 have law degrees.
10 lawyers and 16 doctors running the FDA
To become an 'associate commissioner' or 'assistant commissioner' or to fill any of those positions you have to have significant ties to very influential individuals and once you do occupy that position you have to remember who "got you that job" when it comes to rule making.

yes you hit a nerve....

Look at how the FDA implemented the sunscreen monograph

1978 Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking
1993 Proposed Rule
1996 Proposed Rule: Avobenzone
1998 Proposed Rule: Zinc oxide
1999 Final Rule (requirements stayed in 2001)
2007 Proposed Rule: UVA testing/labeling
2011 Final Rule: Testing & Labeling Requirements
2011 Proposed Rule: Maximum Labeled “SPF 50+”
2011 Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking: Dosage Forms
2011 Draft Guidance: FDA Enforcement Policy
Effective date: June 18, 2012

Even better, enforcement is admittedly selective in that it wont begin until 2013 and then will be based on the company's gross revenue

I digress.. and apologize, it struck a nerve
