How to calibrate a notebook LCD?

I had to get a new laptop and the screen doesn't look right. I have no knowledge on calibrating a LED LCD, or any other monitor for that matter. So, before I mess anything up I would like to know if anyone has done this before and if it's reversible?
I have a laptop with a 17.3" HD + LED LCD display running Windows 7. Generic PnP Monitor on Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset. I can get to the calibrate display settings but kind of don't want to mess anything up.
My photo's look very different on other monitors. I don't want to post washed out looking photos that I have taken the time to edit. Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

It's probably the wrong resolution. Right click anywhere on your blank desktop and select Personalize. Then go to display settings. Use the slider to change the resolution. More than likely you have a widescreen LCD and it is set for normal 4:3 display resolution. You can always simply go back to the prior resolution.

Not to get off topic...
but what is the Diff. between a notebook and a lap top?

Nothing, they are the same. Netbooks are different however. They are much smaller, have a very small processor, and limited memory, and they usually run XP because of that reason. Most of the time they come with internal cellular cards which is why they are so cheap as they require you to sign with a carrier to get it at a cheap price, or even free.
