How To Use Metformin for Bodybuilding

does anyone have an actual number in terms of grams of carbs taken in per 500mg of Metformin? does anyone ever go to 1000mg in one meal and if yes, how high do your carbs go in that meal? Can't seem to find any hard numbers on this or a ratio anywhere, Thanks.

I don't think there is an set number of mg metformin that guy's take per grams carbs. I've heard of guys taking 1000mg after a big cheat meal that had couple hundred grams carbs.
I personally take 500mg twice a day and my daily carb intake is 150-200 tops , generally around 100g
I think it has more to do with why you are taking it and what effect you are trying to get from it.

Let me make a few things known from the beginning. Metformin will not cure all of your worries and allow you to eat like the true fat ass you’ve always dreamt of being. It is not the fat loss pill you have been searching for. You’re a bodybuilder and discipline is your one true master. The grind of eating the same foods, powering through cardio, and pushing past rep barriers you otherwise thought impossible is what you live for. Metformin is just another useful tool in your toolbox to help separate you from the pack of fatties that layer the outer crust of the Earth.



Metformin is a widespread type II diabetes drug used by those who have diabetes or are at risk of suffering from this condition, such as obese patients. It also helps reduce low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and suppresses glucose production in the liver. One of the ways Metformin prevents diabetes is by up-regulating insulin receptors, which become less responsive over time. This means that metformin refreshes insulin receptors making them more sensitive to insulin that the body releases. Since most people are insulin insensitive, their bodies produce too much insulin causing weight gain and leading to more health problems down the road. Metformin will increase insulin sensitivity and prevent these health issues.

Reasons Bodybuilders use Metformin

  • Fuller muscles & better pumps: Muscles will grow fuller when metformin is used with high carbohydrate diets. Plus, better and harder pumps in the gym
  • Lack of fat storage: Metformin helps prevent fat from being deposited, so you get full benefits from carbohydrate heavy meals, without worrying to end up storing fat. This is why diabetics say they 'lean out' on this drug.
  • Insulin receptors: Metformin helps keep muscle cells sensitized for insulin that the body produces.
  • Appetite suppression: This drug will limit hunger, so it's perfect for those doing a ketogenic diet. Furthermore, on re-feed days it makes a perfect addition to your carbohydrate heavy cheat day.


Dosing for Bodybuilders



The way metformin is taken will vary for bodybuilders. Full muscles can be achieved if 500-1000 milligrams (mgs) are taken within 1 hour after a large carbohydrate meal. The more carbohydrates there are in the meal, the higher the dosage should be taken, never exceeding 1500 mgs at a time. At least 100 grams of carbs must be taken for every 500mg of Metformin used or you could experience hypoglycemic symptoms. Nevertheless, Metformin can be taken with as many high carb meals as you wish. The half-life is listed as 4-6 hours. However, there are slow releasing extended tabs available. Bodybuilders should stick to the faster acting version.

Metformin is generally well tolerated and is beneficial to the prolonged dieter attempting to retain muscle tissue while going from lean to shredded, which translates to -- going from 8-9% body fat to 4-5% body fat. When attempting to achieve extremely low levels of body fat, a cascade of hormonal events will take place, making will power, discipline and strong mental fortitude crucial to succeeding. Constant hunger becomes indefinite, while mental acuity begins to plummet.

One option which I personally prefer is to use Metformin on carbohydrate refeed days at 2 days a week. This would entail dosing the Metformin around your refeed period which could be anywhere from 4-12 hours depending on how lean you are.

For example: Let's say your refeed is 6 hours. You would dose 500 mgs at your first bite of food, then 500 mgs 3 hours later, then 1000 mgs right before bed. Why 1000 mgs right before bed you might ask? Because dosing it before bed helps facilitate the transport and clearance of glucose out of your blood stream and into your muscle cells as quickly as possible, so when you wake up, blood sugar and insulin levels are extremely low. Having low levels of insulin and blood sugar will allow you to get right back to oxidizing body fat for fuel opposed to glucose.

To Recap:
(Refeed begins post workout at 3 pm.)

3:00 pm – Take first dose of Metformin (500 mgs) at start of meal

6:00 pm – Take second dose of Metformin (500 mgs) at second meal

10:00 pm – Take final dose of Metformin (1000 mgs) at final meal of day.

(Do not ingest carbohydrates after 10:00 pm so you return to baseline insulin levels upon waking)

Metformin
is very useful to the extreme dieter due to its selectivity towards muscle cells opposed to fat cells when clearing nutrients from the blood. It has become pretty clear that Metformin will play an integral role in the extreme dieter's plight in achieving ultimate body fat loss while retaining lean muscle tissue.
Does all of this also apply to berberine? I just picked up a bottle of berberine 500mg and was wondering the best way to take it. I was thinking 1000mgs in the pm?
 
The web is a HUGE place and yes , just about anything you can ask can he answered with a web search but often not without wading through tons and tons of bullshit.
Same goes for this site.
Nearly every question you see here has been asked at least once and some point or another in the last 18-19 years but again the search can be deep and the exact answer you are looking for might not be answered.
Not everyone has hours a day that they can be on the web looking up shit so I totally understand when someone ask a question that seems like it should be an easy answer.

There are alot more good helpful people on this site than assholes and I get the frustration when someone sees something asked for the 27th time but it really doesn't take any more effort to reply with a helpful comment than it does with a sarcastic one.

Don't ever hesitate to ask questions , you will inevitably get a couple useless remarks but don't let a few bad apples spoil the barrel , there is alot of great guys in here with a tremendous amount of knowledge.

1000mgs of metformin before bed. 500mgs before fasted cardio with 3-5ius of hgh and 2ccs of l-carnitine from synthetek, has done wonders for me this year leaning out.
 
(Not asking for source!!) Any indicators of good met. Anytime I get any, it is garbage, I mine as well be taking a OTC glucose disposal agent. (Which are also shit)

I've often wondered how much of a drop people see when adding metformin at say 1500-2000mg a day if they were having elevated blood sugar issues from say taking HGH??
Like if a bodybuilder was taking 6-8iu a day for a year and his fasted blood glucose was in the 130 range , how long would it take to drop him back below 100??

According to John Hopkin's A1c cab drop up to 1.5%

And 1.5% averages out to roughly 45 points.

But how that applies to BBer's in real life could be different. My fasted glucose years ago was 70-80. After using lower dose HGH and other products like MK-677for years etc. my fasted on 1000mg metformin is around 95 but my peak levels after a meal is usually less then 130. So my A1c is 5.1
 
My HbA1C trending from when I first came off 1000mgs Metformin daily to going back on. All yellow was time off Metformin.

I have used this compound many times. Recently for a few months while I Was on insulin but I felt like it was perhaps competing with the insulin regardless of some reviews I read, so I stopped it, i seem to be recomping at same pace without it. Want to help blood sugar ? Apple cider vinegar daily and cinnamon in your protein shakes
 
I’m not a fan of metformin it lowered my free and total testosterone levels and I also experienced ED while I was taking it.

No.... The health benefits of metformin far outweigh the difference of a couple ounces of muscle AT MOST anyway... David Sinclair who’s a PHD and studies genetics and anti aging etc has studied metformin extensively and also commented on this on JRE podcast and basically the whole thing about “being weak” or affecting muscle building is super negligible, apparently studies showed that individuals that “pushed through” (when it came to rep ranges or overload etc) showed no signs of anything slowing down...

Now especially if you’re on AAS/GH etc, it’s going to have absolutely zero negative effect on you building muscle...

I was considering add IGF-1LR3 to compensate for any loss from the metformin.

My diet is clean now, but I do still hold some excess bodyfat that I am working off now.
