was doing rack deads with heavy weight (for me)... I did 405lbs x 8... on rep like 3 my lower back felt like it was really straining but nothing really bad. I kept on for the next 5 reps and right after it felt as if I had lifted it all with my lower back (2'' above my ass crack fyi)

Well 1 hr later and my lower back is still really sore. Like if i thrust my hips outward my lower back feels really sore... I am worried it is a slipped disc or something..

anyone know whats wrong?
what are some things I can do to help this? Currently I've just taken 3 advil and am strectching it a litlte every now and then... I posted this on another forum and everyone says its really serious and that I should rest it a lot and maybe even get a MRI

plz help

I would use ICE

to reduce the swelling. Try laying flat on your back with Ice pad under you in the area most affected. Sitting and standing put pressure on you lower back so avoid this as much as possible.

ice it/ advil every 4hrs/ don't stretch!
why no stretch?

I have read light strechting is helpful
ie- lay on your back, knees bent, slowly bring right knee to shoulder area and hold for 5-10 secs, repeat with left leg

pelvic thrusts too

you need to find a way to do reverse hypers....asap. Do them 2-3 times a day with no weight and your back will be fine.
If you can't do that then do supermans on the floor and hold each one for 2-3seconds.

If you didn't feel this immediately after or during your set then you'll most likely be fine. I recently hurt myself doing a 1100+ quarter squat and i thought i was out for good. especially since i've already broken a vertebrae. Now after 4 days of rehab and advil i'm back squatting again.

Al good advice

Bulk,

Everyone has given you good advice, but let me add a few thoughts:

You most likely have inflammed the sacro-illiac joint, possibly the L5-sacral joint. Ice will be a great idea until you don't feel ANY pain with just daily movement (getting in and out of cars, sitting, etc). After that you can begin to gradually work your way back up on training.

You might do well to ice after very training session as you get back into things, and then later in the day, apply heat.

See if you can get a good chiropractor to adjust this a couple of times weekly for the next 2-3 weeks, then you should be able to taper off the adjustments.

Hope you're feeling better soon...

Ice it take a antinflamatory and seea chiropractor as quick as possible. I found from experience chiroprctic works best at onset of injury. After that its debatable on how much it helps.

Both of these are good advise..

most imbalances in are not reveled till you lift heavy .. weight.
as you said this is very heavy for you.

I would guess you already had an under lyning problem or imbalance.

A goods sports chiro will get you back in buisness. you need to adress the problem though to prevent any reinjury... good luck..

ya i think i had an existing condition b/c whenever I would drive home (~20mins) my lower back would get EXTREMELY sore/tired in the car (which used to never happen). I cannot pin point why that started happening but I think it could have been b/c of bad form on leg press (I am tall and have long legs so my butt would lift off the pad and after sets my lower back was really sore)

Tommorow I am calling my primary care physician and will ask for a referal from him when.

Ppl have recommended that I see an othrop... what do u think of this?

There is no bursing on the lower back (if there is it is very minor and hard to tell) andd it feels a lot better after I ice it. If yesterday I was at a 10 (being the worst) then today I am at a 7-8 so it is getting slightly better which is good but no where near good enough to where I can to bent over rows or antyhing (it still hurts to bend over)

as for the iceing... I have been just using gel packs (i have 2) and putting them against my back OVER my t-shirt and leaning back (when in my chair) or just laying on it OVER my t-shirt when I lay down... is that ok? is there another method I should be doing?
what about for the heat pack?

what things CAN I do when the back is feeling good enough to lift (would arm curls, bench press, shouler press, calf, etc be ok... basically exercises where I dont really fele my lower back be ok or should i wait till the lowe back is nearly 100%?
what are somet exercises to do once my lower back is feeling better... like before i can do bb rows then what are some when my back is 100% healed?

thx!

Dude, this is weird, I was about to post the same thing. It happened to me 2 weeks ago and is still ingering, but I probably havent been taking it easy enough. I did mine with abotu the same weight, but I was doing deads form the floor, and I jsut wasnt paying enough attention to form like usual b/c I had taken a week off. After the set, it felt as if I had been holding up 600lbs with my lower back for 10 mintues. Let me knwo if you go to the doc or anythign, I am interestied in knowing what he said. I have been applying damp heat, and it has helped some, but its not gone, b/c its not a muscualr soreness, it is actually in my spine. Just naggin achiness. LMK bro, goodluck

Hope you get better soon. I would only do exercises that your back or body is supported for a while. Get well. MM

the ortho may have some good advice. but they will usually give U meds, giving you temporay relief. or coving the problem. not fixing it.

A good chiro will really give you what you want. Try to find one that is into bodybuilding or Just weight training in general and he will be the most helpful.
the ortho is really only going to be good if you are in need of sugery witch i would not do but for a very last resort.

good luck.

hmm that is weird... a lot have been recommending to not see a chiro...

now i am confused lol

I'm going to call my primary physician and see what he thinks (probably not much) and do some more research on this since I am getting a lot of conflicting advice

I have been taking liquid advil and doing the ice packs and that is REALLY helping me out

ice is better then heat. They used to recommed starting with ice and moving to heat but now I have been reading that frequent ice at the beginning 3-4 days of injury is bestand you can add heat after the 3-4 days.
I would check out a good chiro as for some people it works wonders. The hard part is getting a good one. Be sure to ask around. Some of them really try and drag you out into the mulipte visits deal.
I say no stretching until the area stops hurting through normal movement. Every time I have tried to "work it out" through stretching I have made the problem take longer to heal. Listen to your body and do not rush it.

Disc Herniation

Discs don't slip!!! If you "herniated" a disc you would have significant radiculopathy into one or both legs with a "electric" like pain that you could trace with your finger. This pain usually radiates past the knee into the foot. If the pain is localized to the low back it is most likely not a disc problem. It could be muscle strain, Sacro-iliac subluxation (misalignment) or mild ligametous damage. Rest and Ice for the first three days and see a Chiropractor ASAP! If you find a good one he should differentialy diagnose your condition and if he finds positive for a disc then refer you to an Ortho. If it is not a disc you don't need an Ortho, you need to decrease the local inflammation and begin to introduce moblization into the affected area to facilitate healing.

Hope this helps and I hope you feel better soon.

^^ agreed. Slipping is a poor discriptor. If the disc herniated we would not be having this discussion as he would have went to the hospital.
It is possible to have a slightly bulging/ protruding disc without a pronounced radaition of pain down through the legs.

WOW thx for all the great info!

I scheduled an appointment with the doc tommorow and I will report back and let you know what he says

the pain is localized to my lower back (no leg pain... although about 3 hrs afterwards I had a sharp leg pain... it felt as if i had been burned starting from the hip all the way down to my knee but it only lasted 1 sec and hasnt come back since)... but i heard it will only go down to the legs if the disc hits the "sciatic" nerve... but it still can be herniated if it doesnt hit this... not sure

I've been icing it 4-6 times per day and taking ~6 advil per day. The pain isn't so bad compared to the frustration i feel... I feel so helpless since I cannot really do anything more to help the recovery especially since I have so many things I want to do not to mention bodybuilding (I like many of u have a great passion for BBing)

thx again for the help!

Although I agree, it is possible and even probable that you may have suffered a mild herniation, this is not a case for an orthopedic surgeon. 80% of these surgeries fail and require more surgeries. I would see your general and request and MRI, this is the only way to definatively diagnose your condition and therefore correctly rehab and treat it.
