You should watch the new Jay Cutler DVD "One Step Closer". Talk about volume the guy does a billion sets every damn workout and Cutler sure seems to grow. Could have something to do with 10-12 meals a day though.
 
Could also have a lot to do with the amount of GH they are on. I have a few buddies who are amatuers and grow off high volume, but they take 15+iu's of GH ED
 
Volume

Volume of course works and these guys are also genetic mutants that can grow off of staring at the weight too long.

But Volume isn't the fastest and most efficient way these guys can be training. Gustavo, as you said JT, only performs "very few sets of less than 12 reps, yet he still grows."

Actually, it's those sets that he's actually growing. The rest of what he's doing are all warmups.

Same goes for Jay Cutler. I've seen all of his videos except the latest one. He does an amazing amount of set per bodypart and says he doesn't care much for counting reps.

HOWEVER, after he does about 4 "warmup" sets on bench press he's pushing 4 plates on incline; 3 plates on close grip, flat pressing dumbbells in excess of 150 - 160 pounds; Overhead pressing about 130 -140 pound dumbbells - and every single one of these sets are in the 6 - 8 rep range, and then he backs off and does more sets with less weight.

I think these pros are counting all of thier sets and not paying attention to what really is working the muscle. So yes, Gustavo may think all those sets are helping him out, but it's those few sets he does of low reps, pushing hard and actually pushing the serious weight where he's growing. The rest is just a warmup.

Gustavo is the man!! Whatever he is doing seems to be working. Jbomb, what is your opinion on volume training or do you think only the last heavy sets is what counts? I don't think it's the gh rather genetics, nutrition, and hard work.

exactly...in reality even the so called volume guys do no more than about 4 true sets per bodypart, meaning to failure or maybe a rep short. shit if we all counted sets where we could still do more reps then everyone would be a volume trainer.
 
I've watched Jay Cutler's video that i downloaded and i thought the volume he did was excessive but maybe thats what works for him.

I think there needs to be balance. the volume needs to be geared to your work capacity.

I think without a doubt volume is needed for size gains. volume causes protein degradation and muscle break down.

low volume alone seems to produce strength spikes more than anything.
 
Also you are forgetting one thing.... that is all they do for a living. Makes a difference. Don't believe me. Try being a construction worker and getting in olympia shape.
 
That's a good point, these guys can basically dedicate their entire day to recovery so they can do a higher volume. I've heard Jay sleeps like 10-12 hours and eats like a horse so his body most definitly recovers faster than the average person.
