My wife and I both go to the gym every day. I am into bodybuilding and growing(6'3" 230lbs), she is into cardio and staying the same size(5'4" 115lbs). My question is this; how do I get her interested into weight training? She doesn't like the way muscle looks on women but I think she is missing the picture. I think it is beautiful, shows hard work, dedication, and pride in yourself. Now I am not saying I want her to get to the size of someone like Vicki Nixon(although she is beautiful), but she would look good the size of Jamie Easton or Pauline Nordin. My wife is still young(23) and if she uses any type of weight she puts on muscle like right now, and that turns her away from the weights. So how do I ease her into weight training?

Thank you so much for your help

Daniel

hummmm...

DRock, it sounds like she is lucky in putting on muscle so fast, which is so hard to do for most...maybe genetics..., but if she really doesn't want to touch a weight, no one can make her.....She would have to want and understand how weight training will keep her in shape for years to come, and women DO NOT get huge from training with weights as you probably know....If it was that easy, I wouldnt be fighting everyday to put muscle on now, and believe I am lifting alot and eating my protein, but it takes time.
Hopefully she can see that weight training for lean muscle is beautiful and sexy and will fight fat.

i prefer some little gunns on a hotty and a visable six pack goin is nice to

Marilyn is correct. While I do not doubt your statement about her gaining muscle I believe this is more a perception than a reality. What most likely happens is she starts to notice a change in shape and that freaks her out a little. But remember to have shape you must have muscle. Cardio alone will keep her weight down but she will still take on the soft appearance of a skinny fat person. No firmness and no real shape. I would be willing to bet if she gave an honest weight program a try she would like her looks in about 12 weeks time. Just remind her she will not be 23 forever and as she ages weight training will be her only slavation to a firmer, sexier figure. Not to mention the whole host of other benefits to her general health.

Thank you for your input guys. Small, toned, cut body would look great on her. I think you gave me a basis to start talking to her about.

I want to stay strong as I get older, which is my biggest reason for continuing to lift. Most people meeting me in street clothes think I just look normal size.

I started when I was about her age. It's made everything I do easier - from moving furniture by myself to giving birth. I'm now watching my friends from high school get fatter and complain about how they feel, but don't have any motivation to change.

I decided long ago that I didn't want to give up like that.

And Dad likes the 'big girls', so no worries there for me!

Just try to keep encouraging her without nagging.

It so hard for must women to really understand muscle growth until they go on a "cutting' diet. They always see the scales going up and panic. It takes longer to see the muscle definition. What happened to me was I started training for my first competition at 125 lbs. I thought that I had good muscle, but when it came to competition day I ended up at 108 lbs.

A good comparison are fashion models verses fitness models. Most of the fashion models are skin and bones. Their arms, shoulders have no muscle definition. If you diet and done weight train you will end up with nothing but a thin layer of muscle and skin & bone... now that's not sexy.

YES! Exactly my point. Right now she is 5'4" and 113 lbs. She is only 23 but I want to get her started with the weights now because it will pay off in the long run. I think I just have to bring it up a little at a time and start educating her. Maybe I'll bring her to this site and show her some pics. HAHA
Thank you all for your input. You have been a real help to a newbie to this site. You are all good people

Daniel
