The King of Hardcore and a man who showed what the mind and body were capable of. It's interesting when he says he only squated twice a month because he knew it fried his CNS. For some inspiration watch this before going to the gym!

I was him workout in World Gym in Venice, CA once, shoulders. (Sadly
it was not a squat day . . . probably would have blew my little mind).
He defined the meaning of intensity.

The only other the matched that intensity was Casey Viator in Lake Helen, FL
when Jones was around. Left to his own devises he worked had but nearly
as hard.

I has of often been been theorized that wow much of his development was
attributed to Arthur pushing him or the actual equipment. I think it was both.

FYI . . . Ellington Darden prepared his comeback at the NABBA MR. U, Jones
was too busy and probably at that did not care much for bodybuilding by then
(burnt out, my words) so at that time he relegated his training and diet to
Darden.

He was robbed at the contest my David Johns . . . my opinion.

Maybe in my early 20’s… But my body can’t take the abuse now in my 40’s. I’d end up being injured and then what’s the point. But to each their own! Whatever works for you!!!

Cage

His level of intensity and training is another level! My CNS would be fried too if I hit body parts the way he did (in my younger days)...now it would send me off to the next life! LOL!! The videos are fun to watch and absolutely reinvigorate me!

My only criticism of Tom were his explosive movements on some movements (leg
extensions primarily. FYI . . . Ray Mentzer could do the entire Nautilus leg extension
machine . . . with one leg,) but make no mistake he is a great guy and ambassador to
the sport. (He too was robbed by Columbo . . . Gyno and all. Pure political in my
opinion.) and he was blessed with the perfect structure for squatting and not so
in good shape in other body parts. He could sure bring the house down without all
the antics you see today.

He did write a training book, a good one. He has a big proponent of 4 days a week
training for maximum results. Good book if you can find it.

He also had titanium knees, I think to this day they are fine but who knows down
the road but I hope. Look at 'old-timers', they are paying for it, Just ask Bill Pearl,

I've read that Ray was incredibly strong. Like legendarily strong and more so than most ifbb pros, particularly in Squats and Chest Presses. If i had to bet on what ifbb pro trained the hardest, i'd probably bet on Platz. I agree with you though, have seen footage of him doing some odd movements with very explosive but kind of sloppy form. There's a vid of him doing Behind The Neck Pullups and also Behind The Neck Smith Press and he's basically bouncing his body up and down for the Pullups and bouncing on the Press too and i could only think how quickly that would destroy my shoulders. I know he tore his bicep at one point.

The pullups you're describing are in the video. Once Platz would burn out full range of motion he would continue on with partial range of motion until there was hardly any ROM at all. Complete and total burn out. I get inspired and burned out just watching his videos! LOL!!

Yup, that is he trained. Balls to the wall. Like the the the
Eveready battery . . . . he would just keep going and going.
Effective for him. That is not called bodybuilding, it is called
mindtraining.

Casey was the complete opposite. Pure controlled movement
to utter failure with a few cheats at the end. But he worked very
hard, very fast, and very briefly. And Arthur would get a few
more reps out of him. Hell he could get a few more reps out of
rock.

I only saw Arthur train once (rare) on a new pulllover machine.
Somebody has ta
ping it. I used to have the tape, maybe I will
still do but that.
After Inge died the day before I arrived there, a friend if mine and
I cleaned out his storage locker . . his request) it would VHS
machine to play it. And it would require require looking at a all
the of VHS tapes. Very time consuming.

I really need to convert them to DVD's. Someday. Next time I am
at my locker ( the storage locker I will take a foto of all the info I
have collected by him, much of which we gave to me, no strings
attached. Might even post a few choice items. You just might be
surprised. impressed. One of a kind.

When we cleaned out his storage locker we threw out probably a mile
of old useless ektchrome film that had gone bad. It has captured his
exploits all over the world I guesss. a piece of history that will
probably never be repeated. Really sad it had spoiled in the Florida
heat and humidify in a metal shed. Off to landfill it went.

Ron it would be great to see some of that!

Platz had to have some seriously resilient joints to last as long as he did training in his manner. I know he did some serious sissy squat type hack squats that would turn most people's ankles to gravel.

Bio;

I am looking at a bunch of scans right now (the author of his autobiography
had it done and gave it to me, saves me a bunch if time.) He has things I
do not have but I will include my stuff too.

There is some exercise material in there but a bunch of historical material,
wild animals, snakes, etc. when he was in the film making business. I think
it is great but believe it or not it is pre-Nautilus is what I am most interested
but it bores most people.

And give a me a few days to sort this out. Soooo much material. I will try and
stick to the 'hard' core material.

Unfortunately I do not have the Sergio, Arnold, Franco fotos. They must have
went with the sale of Nautilus ;-( But lots of interesting things non-the less.

Is anybody is still interested In what I have I will post it up. Clearly not in keeping
with the OP's topic but if you think I should start another thread, please let me
know Bio.

Cheers.

he would push his knees all the way forward and his heels would come off the platform. he would push his knees as far forward as they could possibly go. It's almost like a sissy squat (the way they're supposed to be done where the lever is far away from the knee joint not the baloney you see now) done on a Hack Squat machine. I've done Hacks this way as i can't put much weight on the Hack Squat anyway due to disc problems and it works great for quads but it would be hell for most people's knees. You absolutely can't use much weight (if any) doing them in this manner. I believe John Meadows made a video doing them in Platz's style.
