Hey all

I am back from Russia. It was a great trip and the best amateur show I have participated in. The standard was extremely high for all catagories. I think there were 65 countries competing and most catagories had about 40 or more competitors. The hotel and venue for both the prelims and finals was awesome. The hotel had gym, sauna, steam, massage and solarium free for all competitors plus it had services such as money exchange, transport, 6 restaurants, shops etc...all under one roof. They even had a guy playing piano in the lobby and during the dinner times and a huge sculpture (about 2 stories tall) of a body builder doing a classic greek god type pose in the lobby of the hotel.

At the prelims, which was in the same building, they had wide flat panel screens in the pump room so we can watch the action onstage while warming up. The pump room was huge and had many mirrors, weights, water etc... for the final there was a laser show, russian dance/ballet routine, actors doing some kind of greek god performance and huge screens on each side of the stage so you could see if you were in the back of the ultra modern high tech theatre. The theatre was glass and beech wood inside and had a huge new pipe organ that they used during the performances...The contest flowed smoothly and was very well organised. The Russians did it very well. The food, tours and entertainment was also very good. For the finals the buses were police escorted to the theatre to make a big deal out of it all and the media were there. I saw Ronnie C. and Tommie Thorvildson on a Russian game show later in the evening while doing cardio of course LOL. All amateurs got to see the Russian Pro Grand Prix free of charge. I am sooooo tired now.

The post contest banquet was ON:

Tables decorated with lots of flowers and crystal, wide screen monitors around the stage so you can see the performances from all over the banquet hall.

Food:

beef, glazed pork, chicken, smoked ham
smoked salmon & tuna
caviar
stuffed grape leaves
stuffed olives & egg plant
russian foods (cheeses, soups and potato)
several types of pasta salads with seafood
Russian desserts
homemade breads
fruit platters
cheeses
two types of Vodka
red and white wines
beers

Several bands the first one was big band jazz from Cab Callaway to Gershwin the band was a 16 piece orchestra...next was the rock/pop band and then when everyone was buzzed from Vodka out came the the Russian Folk band dancers and singers which was AWESOME. They did the Russian dances with the kicks and had on the traditional clothing of Russian men and women farmers and workers...thats when the party started going OFF. People were droppin down to the damn floor and kicking their legs up...women were spinnin in circles yelling. The place went into a frenzy......and I went to bed.

Oh one thing that was strange...this show is drug tested...so there were a few athletes that placed top 5 that did not show up for the testing...They actually stopped the music and announced that they had 10 minutes to report to doping control and announced their names, countries and the country presidents names. So doping control at the Worlds is NO JOKE. Top 5 in EVERY catagory was urine tested and the contest also has the option to do random tests during the competition.

MonstaDwarf my Aussie room mate earned 10th place. I watched his catagory very closely and took many photos both in the warm up area and onstage. MonstaDwarf aka Neil was full, hard and ready. He also displayed the best posing and personality onstage. He did get a warning for something he was doing onstage but I cannot remember exactly what it was about. I think Neil came in at 70.0 kg. It was fun watching Neil do his competition prep program (he is VERY strict and precise)...and I know Neil got a laugh out of mine because he said he never seen a person take things so relaxed; especially when I thought I was doing it hard on the diet and cardio. According to Neil I also never sleep, which might be true but I never noticed it until I spent time with someone else going through the same process.

My opinion is that for Neil to move up in his catagory he will have to either come in at a heavier catagory or come in with the striated quads and glutes at 70 kg.

The heavyweights was a mess...the standard was so high they decided to create a new catagory starting next year for superheavy weights. I weighed in at 98.7 kg (about 218) and was the lightest onstage at about 99.8 kg (I did MAD cardio everyday up until prejudging for at least an hour or more to drop more fat and water, my goal was to come in depleted but hard...I left Australia at 103 kg). However, not to worry about being flat because the idea must have worked, this was the first time that Neil, the IFBB Australian,British & South African team presidents said...I looked good, held my own onstage and was in the best shape they had ever seen me in (instead of....your too smooth). All that is fine except the Russian guy on my right was 110 kg (242 lbs) . The other Russian, who was an amateur, also did the Russian Pro Grand Prix....Yep thats right...he stood next to Ronnie C in call outs...then rocked up to do the amatuer Worlds in my division. I had to take him on in the past when the judges made me do symmetry comparisons against him and some other Russian. The call out was like: Sergey Pecsdanokov , Uri Bicpepumplinkadov and number 164 in the centre....number 164 Australia take the centre please...they had to call me twice cause I was standing there with my mouth hangin open thinking these people must be out their damn minds....

For me to improve I have to come in even harder and now due to the new catagory I can possibly stay at the same weight 100kg and focus on higher quality muscles more full round completeness to produce a very athletic look. Pics will be posted shortly.

So its over and I am happy (I dont even want to see another chicken breast or cardio cross trainer).

Canada had a good team that was VERY competitive but I dont think they made the finals in any catagory. :(

The Americans did not participate...again.

The next IFBB World Amateur Champs is in Shanghi China.

Thank you to everyone for your encouragement :)

ps..the rumor is true...Russian women are beautiful

...

Great to hear Ric! I think I know the Russian of whom you speak - monster. Did he have a torn trap or lat at some stage? If it's him, no way fair for him to step into that show when he is competing at a pro level.

Great to hear Neil did so well also. He works bloody hard and deserves everything he gets.

So you got told you looked spot on? How did you feel on stage? You said a little flat, but that mustn't have come across. Have you got any pics? On your frame, I think you could easily hold plenty more muscle if you can come in hard.

And what a show by the sounds of it! Did someone send a written report - or better yet a home video of it - to Paul Graham??? Big screens to watch it backstage (lucky to find your own chair or corner at his shows), russian dancers - that's how it should be, a spectacle and celebration of bodybuilding. Let's hope that catches on.

No comment on the food. I'm hungry now. :) IronMike

Yes I was actually thinking about retiring (note my post in the counselling forum) but this show really gave me more motivation to compete again but look at it from a more fun view. That is because now I have the option to either get bigger , more mass and go over 100 kg or stay under that and focus on quality. It is VERY likely that if the super heavy catagory would have existed at this show I could have made the top 15 and moved into the next finals round because the top guys in the over 90kg catagory would not have been there.

I have to decide what type of look I want. Mass or athleticsm or a combination of both. The guys over 100 kg were just plain monsters with block type builds...and EVERYONE was well over 100kg except me and maybe one or two others out of a field of 42 competitors. The fact that I get compared to people much heavier means that there is something I posses that attracts a judges eye. It happens in almost every show I do whereas the other guys at my size dont get call outs. So I am thinking that I dont have to be 120 kg or 270 lbs to be competitive...I just have to be COMPLETE and CONDITIONED at 220 or 230 to do damage amongst the monsters. For me to go heavier I would need sponsorship whereas to come with more quality I think it doable without sponsorship.

I felt great onstage. I had heaps of energy and was buzzed. My mouth was very dry, not much sweat this time even though I was drinking water like crazy up until going onstage (and nope..didnt use a diuretic), had plenty of veins and pump...so it was good.

This contest was definitely a spectacle. I suspect that the show in Shanghi will also be a spectacle due to the culture and that Bejing is the next Olympic venue. Yeah baby its ON !

Hey ric did you meet a guy named Sam from USA..hes' a friend of mine he competed also.

Great report Ric

Good to hear the fire is still burning, you obviously have much more to contribute.

:)

Hi Nemisis,

I met a couple of Americans there who do not live in the USA anymore. One lives in New Zealand and competed for them, the other I cannot remember what team he was with.

The name of the Russian is Segei Tsikunkov.....he took 3rd at the GP, right behind Ronnie and Fedorov.....him and his sponsor (who, incidently, put up about 500k to hold the World's) were hoping for him to take the overall and qualify for his pro-card.....that, obviously, wasn't going to happen there (he was lookin at 4-6 place in his class after prejudging) so he dropped out with an "illness"

Speaking of "illnesses"....Rodoslav Sladkevich (sp?) from Poland, finished 4th in the 90kg+ class at the World's, also competed in the GP....He looked great, probably the most conditioned guy on that particular stage, getting callout against Ronnie and Fedorov, many had him 3rd after prejudging......well, he suddenly fell "ill" and didn't show up for the finals  ......not that i wanna say anything, but look above at who ended up taking 3rd and earning a potential Olympia Qualification ........had he won the overall at the World's :D

The heavy weight final 15...prejudging rounds

well, this might sound weird but i look forward to the world games more that the olympia.. i like to see the up and comers that are not from this country.. it is too bad in a sense that it was held in russia since it did not seem to attract the middle east talent and the asian talent that the show normally does..

Hi Lats,

There were 65 countries in the World Championships-Moscow. That included teams from Korea, Chinese Taipei, Singapore, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India, Brazil, Jamaica, Barbados, Qatar, UAE, the Pacific Island nations, New Zealand, Australia, Romania, Britain, France, Spain the list goes on and on...they were all there. The next Worlds is to be held in Shang hi China. :)

The team that was clearly missing was the USA. I think the USA may not compete there because the USA nationals are close to the same date and that event is covered by more American media than the Worlds...so therefore more people know about it and there may even be more "prestige/hype" for that event in the muscle mags and videos than the Worlds. So if you are in the USA and in the shape of your life....its clearly a good bodybuilding career option to compete in the USA Nationals. :)

yeah.. i hope to see the worlds get more medis coverage in the states.. it barely gets two pages if that.. i did hear about the new super heavies class.. that should be interesting.. either they will come in very bad shape or it will bring more excitement to the show.. lord knows there is some frickin monsters in this world.. and not just the usa... :D ;)

Damn! Those friggin' heavies and superheavies are awesome! Just wondering...how do they pass the drug testing? How can some of them weigh in the 240's onstage, and yet pass the tests? Interesting. They are all super-awesome, though. Thanks for your "play-by-play" of the event! Its great to know that other countries treat BB with oustanding respect. I bet there was first-class awards for the competitors, too...not those stupid little low-class muscle statues that the promoters give out here!

Hi,

Well in this competition there was no super heavy catagory. The heavy weight and super heavy were combined. Starting next year, the super heavies will have their own catagory because there were too many of them this year and they dominated the stage. You had guys at 205 lbs up against guys at 255 or more which was clearly out of balance and the various countries presidents immediately decided to adopt/create the new catagory.

As far as passing the testing or what they call "doping control" some of the athletes do not pass and it does not seem to worry them because they appear to earn various awards regardless of passing the "controls". As I said in the contest review....the IFBB announced athletes names, countries and their presidents names as to who had not reported for testing. So, the IFBB was no joke when it came to testing and reporting those who failed. After the top 5 in each catagory is tested...the IFBB reserves the right to go randomly through all the atletes, if selected you report immediately to "doping control".

Finally, the awards, these trophies were simply amazing...there were several different kinds...some of them were the torso of a sculpture, they looked like muscular Greek gods and were at least 2 feet tall (hope thats right...I think in metrics now).

ric at ifbb.com they have the top three winners pic up in each class.. looked like a great show..muraco.. as for how they pass.. ric is right .. some will not but, the test itself is not hard to pass.. if the athlete is smart enough to use fast acting gear and stay away from such things as deca that have along half life it is not hard to do.. it is not the athletes fault reall.. the show is tested but, it is not a "natural" show.. the ifbb is not dumb enough to think it is.. they will bust a few to show that the tests do work and many will slip through.. just like the olympics , the nfl, the nba ect ect ..
