How much do you guys normally sleep per night? I've noticed that with everything dialed in (training, diet), sleep can literally make or break your efforts in the gym. 9 hours and I'm great, 7-8 hours work but then I take 45-75 minute nap in the evening. Any less, and there's no real point in training.

I wouldn't say it's making or breaking point. But if sleep deprivation is causing your training to suffer than yeah I would say get more sleep.

I usually get about 8 but any less and its hard for to drag my ass to the gym. The older I get and the more intensely I train the more I feel it too

For me it's.

Food
Sleep
Training

Offseason 8-10 hours, 9 is perfect and never sleepy during the day.

Precontest 6-7 hours especially when the hunger really kicks in

those of you that "wake up" to an alarm going off.....

I feel very sorry for you.....

I get 6-7. If I'm working nights, it's a miracle to get 5. Your body adapts eventually.

2-4, i'm not kidding. Past military life + grad school, not much time to sleep.

Its okay to skimp on sleep or miss a night or two sometimes, but no more than that. Like tomorrow I have to get up early for an MRI, i'm gonna do it bc my insurance is covering it

take some 10 grams gaba in a bit after another meal and hope it knocks me out early and I get good sleep

12% higher rate of mortality if you sleep less than 7-8 hours a night
35% higher rate of mortality if you sleep 9+ hours

Kind of crazy that oversleeping is bad but I read these stats the other day on suppversity I think.

I think you read too much...

I couldn't have said it better myself. Every once in a while I have to set an alarm if I take a nap before work, and my phone is muted just about the whole time too

Just wait till some of you guys start having kids lol...then u will really see how important sleep is.;)

I shoot to be in bed by 10pm every night. My wife's alarm goes off at 6am each weekday. That gives me a chance to get 8 hours. My body is trained to wake up early, so I try and be in bed on weekend also by the the 10pm time.
Good sleep for anyone and overall health is critical.

Sleep is my biggest down fall. Half the week I work the overnight shift and then on my days off I try and switch back so I can enjoy some daylight. Totally screwed up right now and it takes it toll. Still manage to eat and train on the regular but recovery sucks. At least once a week I crash for 15 hours straight after staying up for over 24 hours straight. Hope to get off this shift soon.

I try everything I can to maximize sleep quality. My life is too hectic with so much energy expenditure that optimal sleep is really important to me.

I won't even go train if I have a shitty nights sleep. I feel it's counterproductive.

Sounds rough man. Hope it improves for you!

As much as I despise training in the evenings (due to the crowds), I'm going to stop trying to get up at 4:30 AM to train. I just don't feel that great with less than 7 hours of sleep, for sure.
