I damn near tore off a rotator cuff muscle (infraspanatus) in 1987. Through MANY trials and tribulations, which included 6 chiropractors, a naturopath physician, 2 "Sports Specialists" Orthopedic Surgeons, 3 massage therapists and 2 acupuncturists - I finally found someone (one of the Sports Specialists) that would go into my shoulder with a scope.

Over the years, it would seem to get better, than get re-injured. It wasn't until Oct of 1992 when it started making a "clicking" sound whenever I rotated my shoulder. The Orthopod that decided to scope it thought he'd find bone fragments to remove, similar to what's commonly removed in knees. He said 1/2 hour operation tops. Well - 3 hours later I wake up after he went in and found the real problem. While he had me open he shaved some bone off (something for shoulder impingement?), which he said did lot for athletes, as well as re-attaching the muscle. He said it was a miracle I could even LIFT my arm, let alone bench press 300 pounds!!!

This was the only period where I got completely away from bodybuilding (eating often, working out, etc.) was during recovery. This injury initially occurred Post Cycle and deep down I blamed the gear, not my stupidity for the injury. That's why I chose not to do gear after my recovery (but of course have recently changed my mind!!!).

They wouldn't let me "move" my right arm at all after the surgery, to assure that it would heal for 6 weeks. When they finally let me use it, it was basically locked up. I couldn't raise my arm to brush my teeth, let alone touch the top of my head. It took four, hard, determined months to even "begin" to get a normal range of motion.

It took about another 2 months for me to get back into the gym. Talk about proud - how about asking someone to spot you on the bench press with 5 pounds on each end and then have trouble pushing that up!

I ended up gaining MORE MUSCLE than I've EVER HAD! And this was was done CLEAN at age 40+ WITHOUT ANY GEAR!!!! I ended up far surpassing my best pre-injury bench press.

So if you’re going through a “recovery period,” the muscle and strength WILL COME BACK if you’re consistent and persistent!!

i feel for ya bro speaking for myself i always say its not the weight its how you lift it and my bud told me ya but what you think is light with good form is still a big weight lol so i know what that must have felt like to go back to the gym and put 5 pounds either side but he bro you sure bounced back you have the heart of a mr O bro

My younger brother (he'll be 40 next month) had shoulder surgery about 10 weks ago. It was pinned for 6 weeks and he is having trouble raising his arm above his shoulder. I think I'll email this thread to him for motivation.

I don't know if that post inspires me or scares the shit out of me! After a battery of MRI's I've been diagnosed with Inpingment and torn cartledge(sp?). I was told either surgery or live with the pain. I've been choosing to live with the pain since I've had 3 knee re-construction surgeries (w/cadaver ligaments) and each time my knee gets worse! The first knee operation started out like your shoulder Xcel, 1/2 hour tops! 4 hours later I wake up in recovery and told it's much worse. I HATE SURGERY!

But I'm glad to hear that you've recovered better and stronger!

Do you know what created the injury? Was there something specific or was it a gradual decline in the shoulder.

Too many for me

I had my 4th shoulder surgery a year and a half ago (3 tears in the rotator cuff and and partially ruptured biceps tendon). These are in addition to ankle reconstruction, elbow surgery, hernia repair, and knee surgery. Most are from college football years ago.
I've found that BBing has not only allowed me to recover from the injuries, but made me better than I was before the injury. For me, an injury motivates me to train even harder with more dicipline as I want to continue doing what I love to do.
Whenever I need inspired, I just remember the injuries and my fear that I may not be able to continue in BBing.
Consistent and persistent is the key xcel!!!

Like I said, I was doing way too much weight post cycle on bench press. When my shoulder tore, I could have sworn that I heard it go!!
