Damn I have had a real rough year so far and we are only in the middle of Feb. I was in bed for the first 5 weeks of this yr. Had the flu 2 times one lasting 8-9 days and the other 6-7. In between the flu I trained 2 times. Once chest, shoulders and tri's. The other quads using a leg press.

The day I worked chest that night all of a sudden pain hits me like a sledge hammer in the neck and shoulders. It was so bed it was giving me headaches to the point I couldn't keep my balance and would fall if on my feet for more then 1-2 minutes. This continued for 9 days and then the flu hit's me for a second time. The first day I feel better after the 2nd flu I train legs on the leg press. That night my knees and ankles are shot to the point i can't stand or walk.

So I have seen the Dr 5 straight weeks in a row. I have severe Osteoarthritis in my neck, shoulders, ankles and knees. Also find out I'm a diabetic. Now I'm having low blood pressure issues and with a high resting heart rate which that can't figure out what the hells the problem. The above two just came on in the past 4 weeks. blood pressure normally mid 110's over low 70's. Heart rate normally around high 70's. Every week one has gone up and one down. Yesterday Resting heart rate 121, BP 92/59.

Thank I'm done. Now I'm afraid to do any cardio because of such a high RHR and afraid to lift because it aggravates the Osteoarthritis which lands me in bed.

Fuck how can you just wake up one morning and bingo your body and you have gone to shit.

Sorry for the vent but it is so frustrating

Is it over for you? No... But you will probably should take it a little easier at the gym, and focus on your health as much as possible. It seems your biggest problem is your immune system. Should be taking good antioxidants, vit c, e, etc. And maybe go a step further and try some things like Low-dose Naltrexone. It's a very potent immune system booster, has even been used to fight AIDS. And of course is known for strengthening hormone levels and overall wellbeing. Look into it to see if it's for you.

if I remember correctly you've been partying hard in mekiko, perhaps now your paying the price? My body and mind goes buckwild when I drop the alcohol in the summer time. The diabetes cant be helping the way you feel, especialy if your blood sugar levels arnt managed. Dont pack in the training, down the intensity maybe, lift for health not ego/appearence. Hope your well soon T.O.M. or at least hope you get some good information to help you out.

have you looked at a complete change of diet??

i know people who have had lots of injury problems etc and have changed diet totally i.e. gone from carb to fat diets and have found a complete change.

i dont want to risk fate but after a post by massiveG i started using vitD. that was 2 years ago and touch wood no colds or flu symptoms

I think you should ask your doctor to get you a cardiac workup including an echo. It's possible you have congestive heart failure because of steroid cardiomyopathy. If I remember correctly your doses were high. Good news is stop the AAS it reverses in few people I have read about including maldorf

I think there is some solid advice here. But lets look at it worse case (from a training perspective). Lets say training is OVER for you.. is it REALLY that big of a deal? Aren't there a lot of activities you want to do with your life that being a slave to the gym is holding you back from exploring? Or the fear of "overtraining" or "sucking up" by trying outside interests? Worse case, this actually might be liberating for you and allow you to experience things you would not have otherwise enjoyed in your life.. not a great way to get there... but still you get my point.
Don't get me wrong- training is great.. but so are a lot of other things we can't do because we live the "lifestyle""

Solid post!

I feel "training" is something you do to better yourself. Feel good about it! Whether that be walking on a treadmill or outside (cardio) or lifting some weights. Your still training. Maybe your not lifting as much as before and maybe with age you shouldn't be just for healthier joints and what not.

If your a slave to the gym then I think your missing the point of all this and not "enjoying" your god given ability's... Enjoy Life! It can be over any moment.

I dont think training is over for u i think its a matter of getting your body healthy and then going back to the iron.

I agree . Get your health issues under control and stable first.
You have been at the iron a long time so muscle memory will bring
you back when you progressively ease back into your training.
When you get the health issues in check your training will become enjoyable and productive again. Keep us posted , best wishes . T

I want to thank each and everyone of you for your kind thoughts. I do believe if I can get my BP and RHR back to normal things might just turn around for me.

Again thank you...T.O.M

you have had a couple rough months, you body is in shock and your beat up. i think you will get better big guy. i am a type 1 diabetic, not easy. you are type 2 which sucks but can be managed well with diet. no more beer, shits no good. keep your head up. anyone would feel beat up after the month you have had

I think if you cut out all partying(you are in your 60's, its hard on the body), and focus on diet then you will be okay. Drinking with diabetes is a bad road to go down, so hopefully you will stay dry.

There is alot to life. Explore many things.
Good luck.

A resting heart rate of 120 bpm is highly irregular. Have you seen a cardiologist yet? I would think they would at bare min. give you and EKG to look for conduction problmes in your heart or blockages. To me if your BP is low and your heart rate is high it tells me that your heart isnt contracting very hard or efficient and because of that it has to beat a lot faster to compensate. Cardiac output= heart rate X stroke volume. It sounds like the stroke volume could be down, and that would mean a low ejection fraction. Could be a blockage somewhere or some other state.
Now as you know Ive had a heart attack, so I tend to over think these things but I would get it checked out if I were you. Chances are its not heart trouble, but I would be concerned if I were you after having a heart rate that high.
Is the HR that high when laying in bed, like after waking up in the morning out of sleep? Mine was up about 110 bpm when I was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy. I think Pekkerwood could comment on this too as he had it bad. Chris 250 too had cardiomyopathy but seems to have mostly recovered.
Just ask to see a good cardiologist I would say. Is it just a GP youve seen so far? What did the GP say about it?

I wouldnt push it now. WIth a resting heart rate that fast you could push yourself into a bad tachycardia like I did after my heart attack. Get your heart back in shape first.

Speaking as a medical professional... I think you should get a cardiac workup done as stated above... Good luck brother... Keep on abstaining from the drink and don't lift until cleared by your doc... BP - hypotension and tachycardia can mean several things... A doc would be the best bet and not an ortho either...

TOM, you are an old war horse! You won't allow yourself to be kept down for too long and you know this to be true.

You partied hard for decades upon decades, then you quit cold turkey. Your body is going through a tail spin. Give things time to settle, take care of the health problems you have and you will be back in the gym before you know it.

I have checked myself the last 2 morning after getting up and the RHR is 110 both daysand my BP was back to normal for me 110/70. She did a ekg on me wed after she saw the HR was 121. All she said is that my heart was was thick. These specialist are getting more difficult to get appt's with. I made an appt with my cardiologist but can get in until april 19th which sucks
