I PROBABLY TEND TO OVERTRAIN IN ADDITION TO BEING COLD. THAT'S ONE THING MONTANA HAS AGAINST IT...NOT THE IDEAL TEMP TO TRAIN IN....EASY TO COOL OFF OR NOT WARM ALL THE WAY UP.

It's not always about being a morning person

You’re taller when you wake up in the morning than when you go to bed at night. This happens because the discs are hydrophilic, which means they suck up water while you sleep and when there is no immediate stress present.

After getting up, hydrostatic stresses of just walking around and using the muscles during the day compress your spine and the fluid is squeezed out, decreasing tensions in the disc. So, when you wake up the extra height in the discs are similar to a full water balloon ready to burst and if you bend, you build up much higher stresses in the disc. Actually, the stresses are three times higher than when you do the same bend two or three hours later.

Now I’m not talking about getting up and going for a walk or going for a jog first thing in the morning. I’m talking about heavy bending exercises, like good-mornings or sit-ups. For some reason people think that this would be a good thing to do in the morning. It’s the worst possible thing you could do for the back first thing in the morning. Full spine bending first thing in the morning is a great way to damage your back..but hey thats just my 2 cents.

I guess this will be my first post as it's a topic that is hitting close to home. I've been asking this (working out in the AM) on a few other boards and the responses seem to be mainly based on personal preference and less on science.

I've since switched to AM lifting for the simple fact that I have a 6 month old, and I'm trying to free up my evenings for her and Mama. I've still yet to acclimate to it. Jonnyel's post is one of the few I've seen showing a valid reason not to workout in the AM. I also remember an old study regarding swimmers and workouts not being as productive in the AM versus that of the evening.

I have to bump this one up, as I'd like to see more scientific and empirical data. I'll need it to convince the wife that I won't be spending as much time on the couch with her at night.

About 5 years ago I switched from evening workouts to EARLY AM workouts. Look at this schedule:

1. Alarm goes off at 3:30 AM
2. Bathroom, dressed, feed cat, drive to gym
3. Begin workout at 4:00 AM
4. End workout at 5:00 AM
5. Shakes, breakfast, etc.
6. Catch train from home at 7:30 AM
7. At work by 8:30 AM
8. Back home at about 7:00 PM

That's a long day, and the reason for the switch was that I was getting too tired after work to train. Since switching to the mornings I have been turbocharged! I am psyched to get up and out to the gym, and there is a hardcore group of sick f'ers there at that hour - garbage collectors, bouncers, fire fighters, etc. It is the best! No punks, time-wasters, etc.

I literally could never imagine going back to night with one MAJOR exception. The "scenery" at my gym on a weeknight is insane! Wall to wall girls! In the mornings there is nothing to look at..

Coopie Im guessing after 7-8 PM its lights out.
Thats hardcore, No way I could do it... Im with Flex10...Only thing waking me up at 3am would have to be an emergency or some booty :)

The same thing has happened to me twice, the sartorious about half way down the inside of my leg. The last time was in January and I was about 8-10 weeks out from a show. I was training at night though. I wasn't going heavy, but doing sets of 25 reps with only about 200lbs. I couldn't even do a 20lb leg extension. I didn't do squats the entire contest prep. I could do leg press and real light hack squats the following week after it happened, but I always had it in the back of my mind. It sucked big time.

rAJ - Yup. I usually hit the pillow at like 8:00 and I fall asleep by like 9:00.

I live like the Amish!!! :eek:
