Dudes huge...I just don't think 60 sets per bodypart is the smartest way to train. Is it working for him? Sure, but he may have a better chance if he cut the sets in half or even more!

Well it definitely seemed to work better for him than for his mentor Michalik, he's huge while Michalik would be outmassed by a lot of todays' 'naturals'

I use to work at the gym (Gold's I think) on Atlanic Blvd in Delray that John use to train at back in the mid 80's when he took Clifta Coulter on to win the Nationals. He was/is a great trainer.


I haven't seen him in years and he looks HUUUUUGE!

I know John pretty well and he is a great guy but his training methods are ridiculous.

I remeber John Defendis from the 80s and his crazy super high volume training.If he still trains like that,power to him.

Looked like the first 2 shots were from a while back.
the last shot was probably pretty recent.
He helped one of my friends win a big regional show in about 85-86.
Might have fared well as a pro(he didnt) without the 60 set per body part workouts. That type of workout is about triple the sets needed at any level.
The intensity could not be that high for that many sets for any length of time.
Your nerves and adrenal glands would be fried. kind of the total opposite of yates training when he was winning.Get in do it and get out!

Not counting warm ups I do 60 working sets per bodypart. It only takes my 15-20 workouts to get all 60 in though.
