Hey guys,

I have been on the ketogenesis diet for a week now and i am already feeling great and have had great results. my question is: are diet sodas/beverages/sugar-carb-calorie free drinks ok to have on this diet. I know that logically, if it has no sugar, or carbs etc. it should be fine, but i've read and heard things that sometimes artificial sweeteners like aspartame, splenda etc. cause your glucose/insulin to spike, even though they are fake. Now, i'm not sure if it is sugar alcohol or whatever. But I love diet soda, it helps make me feel full and i just wanted to make sure i could keep drinking it. so, can i keep drinking it??

I dont see why not. Aspartame, as far as i know, does nothing to your insulin levels. Aspartame is the artificial combining of two amino acids, phenylalanine and Aspartic acid. Aspartame is digested by the body in exactly the same way as protein foods. I'm pretty sure anyway. I mean, I could be wrong :p
But I know a ton of diabetic people who drink diet soda, and you are basically diabetic on a keto diet. Drink away bro. Unless you find that your results start slowing down, then maybe cut the soda see if it makes a difference.

Not I

Would have to say that you would be better off just drinking straight water or flavored water as the carbonation is not real good for your digestive system and this I can vouch for myself.
Used to have terrible heart burn and finally figured out that anything carbonated was the direct culprit. Not to say that it will effect you the same way but my own personal opinion is to steer clear of carbonated drinks.

In an article in
“Mindconnection’s Information Connection: How to Have Healthy Skin”
http://www.mindconnection.com/library/health/skinhealth.htm,
we learn that carbonation can break down calcium in the human body,
which can be a risk to weak tooth structure and in severe cases lead
to osteoporosis.

In her article “Natural Remedies for Heartburn”, Alli Parker explains
other risks involving carbonation including esophagus irritation leading
to bloating or indigestion.

Just a couple small articles found after googling effects of carbonation.

YES

Yes, you would be better off drinking straight water.. But if you want a diet soda everyonce in a while it wont hurt your keto diet. Which is what the question was. Good bit of in depth info there bro :)

Agreed.

Yes, agreed. Wont hurt the state of ketosis a bit! You are a wealth of information and support Natabolic, thank you.

Many beleive that aspartame can spike your insulin to a small degree and citrus acid can kick you out of ketosis. I wouldn't worry about it, I personally don't buy it, and I've always tested pos for ketones while drinking sodas all day on a keto diet.

Exactly.

Thanks bro :)
appreciate that.

I really wish I could find the article, but there was a recent study that showed that sugar alcohols, unlike previously thought, actually do cause an insulin spike. I don't know how credible a resource this was, but for me, I just stick to water and herbal teas during the week. Then, when I'm carb-loading I'm a lot more flexible.

You can have a diet soda or two if you like. But water is the best route. Aspartame has been shown to spike insulin levels slightly, but only in some individuals...not all. If you get hungrier when you eat aspartame then this is what is happening. If you don't, then you are probably ok. The safest bet is to stick with water.
