Hey everyone, I wanted to get a few opinions on an issue that I'm having. I've recently gone to see an orthopedic specialist regarding my knees. I was told that my knee caps aren't aligning in the grooves properly and I'm getting a lot of friction as the leg straightens. This is causing a bone spur and some minor arthritis and therefor varying levels of pain, mostly dependent on activity level. The catalyst was when I tried to do some interval training one night and couldn't do steps for almost 2 weeks.

The orthopedist can do steroid/cortisone shots or what he called a shot that's like an oil change for the knees. These would be done a few times yearly and only if they work for me and provide noticeable relief.

My question is mainly concerning these shots for my knees. I'd appreciate any feedback regarding cortisone or knee injections in general and any results anyone has experienced.

On a side note, I've also entertained Deca at 100mg weekly to help out as well, considering my back and neck are going to be next on my list to look at. I'm just not sure if Deca can help as much. Im on trt. Any feedback appreciated!! :D

I've heard of some ballsy mf'ers researching pentosan on themselves ( including in the knees ). With all the new peptides with healing properties out there now, if I were having issues I would probably research those.

Cortisone will help...the question is for how long...cortisone shots work for two days...two weeks... two months...varies person to person. Also your Dr probably won't give you more than two or three in a year. Ive been told by my ortho that the cortisone is bad for the connective tissue in your knee joints....

Based on what you said it sounds like you have a patellar tracking problem that is either caused by a muscle imbalance or some restrictions/tightness. You can mask the pain with the cortisone shots, but you really need to see a physical therapist who can correct the problem.

I'll check out pentosan. I've never researched it. I've given tb 500 some thought, but just hadn't looked into peps much. Gh I guess could always be an option.

Yea I was told that they won't rely on them more than a few times a year and they have to substantially make a difference for them to keep administering them.

That's actually right on man. I was told its due to a weak vastus medialus (spelling?) Aka the tear drop muscle. I've been doing extensions, squats, presses and sprints for years now and I've never developed my lower quad substantially. I have a nice sweep and hamstring, but have more of a Mike Tyson looking quad if I could paint a picture. I was surprised to hear its from an imbalance because my legs are my best part!

I would find an MAT specialist in your are; there is probably a good reason they aren't aligning and a shot won't fix that.

I would leave the injections alone and take muscle96ss' advice. Find a physical therapist and try to correct the problem.

Getting Synvisc injections may help you out, something to ask your doc about. Definitely helps a lot of people.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll look into physical therapy. I did get a nice list of stretches and exercises to do. I'll have to give them a shot.

Synvisc is an excellent product! Do your research on how to get it administered. The 6mls all at once or 2mls per week for 3 weeks. Been using it for 4 years now, getting the injections spread out seems to prolong the positive effects of the product resulting in injections annually instead of every 6-9 months.:D

I get cortisone in my knees and shoulders
But for different reasons than you.
Arthritis is mine and for me hands down works wonders.
deca for joints a joke.
as SS says see if you can make a correction
But if your orthopedic specialist say this would be or may b helpfull to you I would not hesitate

This is what worked for me with my knee issues, did the 2ml shots each knee for 3 weeks. About 3-4 months in after the series of shots and still feel damn good. My issue though was simply the knee fluid was low in my knees so when they were bent for awhile all the fluid would disperse to the sides of my knees causing pain. If I sat through a movie then stood up it was very bad pain for about 15min before could walk like normal. Couldn't even do squats with just 1 plate on each side it was so bad. No almost back to normal leg workout weights. Unfortunately no cure so probably have to do this method for awhile.

This with a course of physical therapy is your best long term answer. Cortisone will destroy the tissue even further.

I have weird knees and had to get a cortisone shot once. It was the only thing that made the swelling behind my patella go away. No more than 3 a year or it will start to break down the tissue.

Synvisc i had done in elbow work good for while but its more meant for knees. so my insurance only cover sit for that. Had cortisone for knee before worked ok. whatevr you get it more short term until you correct the imbalance.

Awesome advice here. Therapy and possibly a shot to keep the pain minimal sounds good. I'll update this whenever I have more feedback!!

FWIW, sounds like my leg development is (was) a little like yours. I squatted relatively heavy (best was ~500 for 12 reps) since 18 yoa (46 now), played sports, running, pounding minor pain got worse until I could no longer squat more than 225 without pain. Went to ortho in early 2009, got injections in one knee, it seemed to help, along with glucosamine and Mobic. So in later in the year I did the other one. The combo of the cortisone and mobic etc, eased my pain such that I worked my way back into squatting sets of 8 with 405 in December of 2009.
Doc did say there was a risk of it weakening connective tissues, but just to be smart, and since 405 isnt much weight, I figured I was being smart. January 2010 I had bronchitis, didnt train, but was on levaquin. Started back in Feb squatting again, and by mid late Feb I was back under 405. On Feb 25 '10 I had a complete bilateral quad tendon rupture - surgery, full casts, no unassisted walking for almost 3 months.
Doc said that weight should never have crushed me like that, must have been some outside influences affecting it, he said could have been either the cortisone, levaquin, or combination of both. The pain relief gave a false sense of healing, and I proceeded trying to train heavy. His words were "Pain is there for a reason, sometimes you need to pay attention to it and fix the problem, not just mask it."
Just my .02, not wanting anyone else to go through that nightmare
