Knee Injury

So I injured my knee :(

We were doing wrestling drills during BJJ, wrestled with a really good college wrestler. He tripped me, and my knee twisted and I felt a pop. Pain in the side and back of knee. Hurts to bend it all the way, but ok to straighten it. And it buckless to the side.

I'm thinking a torn meniscus or acl. No bad swelling though.

Any of you guys experience anything like this from lifting or sports? Any advice?

Not sure if I'll need surgery, will need imaging probably :( ...resting it right now, gonna go buy crutches.

Anything you guys add to help heal it faster? GH, BPC..etc?

I had an injury that sounds similar many years ago. As well as a few others. Going in this week to see how long till I need a knee replacement. Take care.

Similar thing happened to me but not to that extent. I just tripped on an icy surface and yes same tendon but I self diagnosed everything, miniscus was fina again in my opinion. I did not went the active recovery route though. Imo it was a grade 1 tear and it could be felt on around the knee on palpating. Was thinking about the exercise but just took stuff that was supposed to heal it at least on paper..
So I am still on an oily fish rich diet every day and foods high in vitamin c
Took turmeric with black pepper throughout the days and also glutamine 7-8gms each time hroughout the days with ascorbic acid at least 2 3 times a day aminimum of 3 grams per day, also at least 5 6 gms of Msm.
Did the test that physiotherapists perform for this and now it does seem healed, but even though I took all the above it took much longer than expected for a grade 1 tear.. There was however a minor swelling with me.. Good Luck and I would recommend you however to do the active recovery exercises after a couple of days for faster recovery. Even better if you can visit a sports physio or find some other higher quality drugs than the above which are just supposed to work on paper if you Google tham

Do everything to keep inflammation down, including NSAIDs, and lots of ice. You are going to need imaging (xrays and MRI), find a knee specialist who works with athletes, preferably a team doctor for a pro team.

Could be many things, but the fact you felt a pop tells me you need to find a good ortho and get a MRI. It very possibly could be a combination of more than one thing; such as ACL and meniscus. What happens is you tear a stabilizer(like ACL) which allows movement that trashes the meniscus too. The fact that you have no swelling is a really good sign though, but the buckling is a concern.

I don't think you want to be taking any GH or peptides now that you've injured. They're better for injury PREVENTION and rehabilitation way after the trauma/surgery.

I'd get a diagnosis as soon as possible that way you can figure your way forward.

Be aggressive with rehab. Even if you tell them you can handle a lot, they will cover their asses because they're used to rehabbing slobs.

Could be the Uhappy Triad. The ACL, medical meniscus, and medial collateral ligament. https://www.healthline.com/health/unhappy-triad

Those three are all attached a bit in the knee joint so can all be injured at the same time.

Sounds like an ACL tear. Sorry you injured yourself. For future, its not worth it to do this type of activity as you will learn. Good luck with your recovery.

It could be several things, including & especially what's already been mentioned. I wouldn't jump to conclusion with needing surgery & all that though. I thought I had tore something in my knee once & everytime I used it after that, it would swell up BAD!

Ended up having Hoffa's Syndrome. Had a bruised pad & lots of inflammation! I figured it would go away quick, but it definitely didn't. Some cases need surgery, but mine did not. Lingered forever, but finally got better. It pops a lot, but no pain to a point that puts me out of commission now, like it was than. Whatever it is, I hope it gets better soon.

Thanks guys!

I appreciate all advice. Got crutches and a knee brace, limping around with them. Knee can straighten and can bear some weight on it. Won't bend past 90 degrees without pain and some popping/ligament movement going on.

Still no swelling though :(

Gonna go see a doc tomorrow at the clinic I work at and probably start with an Xray

Yeah, good idea to see a doc right away. These things are not life threatening so no need to worry as you will get over this in time.

An x-ray usually is needed to rule out fractures which is unlikely but also a prerequisite for insurance to approve MRI's usually. MRIs will show you the soft tissue such as ligaments (ACL, PCL,, MLC, LCL) and also your meniscus. Insurance sometimes wants to hear you have "catching and clicking" and "feel unstable" and the mention of "a popping sound with injury" along with an exam that correlates with a soft tissue injury to approve MRIs.

Maybe have a similar injury. Here's how mine happened:

Guy had a single leg on me, had me cracked down, knee was pinned down (that leg was in something like an "L" shape) and he pulled up on my lower leg while the knee remained pinned to the mat. POP!!!! i was ok and continued to wrestle (or so i thought). Then hours later, the pain began. I couldn't put weight on that knee if i kneeled down. I could not do the Figure Four/Piriformis Stretch without immense pain in my outer hamstring tendon on the affected knee. Couldn't do a Standing Leg Curl. Pushing off on that knee was also troublesome and uncomfortable. I could do bodyweight squats and lunges, though.

Imaging...showed nothing. This made diagnosis troublesome. Saw an Ortho first and he told me i had tight hamstrings and nothing was wrong. Bullshit. Saw a Sports Medicine..."your imaging looks good, nothing torn. I'm not sure why you're in pain, though." At least he was honest.

So...went to Physical Therapy. It's been at least six months. I'm a lot better, not perfect. PT thinks I had bad strains and a possible avulsion type injury. LCL was definitely affected and maybe meniscus. We're still not sure as MRI showed nothing. He never recommends surgery so in some way, it didn't matter if anything was torn or not. We worked on stretching and improving ROM in said stretches and i continued training my lower body to the best of my ability.

A friend of mine who is a doctor thinks that because my leg was straight when the MRI was taken, that's why we couldn't see anything. He thinks if they MRIed my leg while it was folded, we might have been able to see the damaged structures. FWIW, my leg had no pain when straightened, plenty of pain in specific folded positions.

Here's my opinion FWIW; Get an MRI ASAP and then see someone (preferably a Sports Medicine doc) who has experience with athletes. Find a good PT and give it time. These injuries take a while to heal. What i did (and still do when injured) is lots of drilling. Drill as much as you can. Not being able to go live sucks balls but at least you can get time on the mat and improve. Good luck!

Went and saw a doc

Best Case: Just a knee sprain of MCL and meniscus and I can be back to normal in a month or so with PT and rest

Worst Case: MCL and/+ meniscus tear which might require surgery depending on severity and mobility :(

I'll get an MRI referral in 2 weeks after stiffness and swelling is down.

Maybe this is a blessing...with all this coronavirus stuff going on, rolling around with 20-30 sweaty guys in an enclosed facility is probably not ideal

I tore my acl in 2013. It wasnt fun. Try to stay positive. If you need to rest: ps4, pc, or switch.

I went the cadaver tendon route. Took a long time to get that tear drop equal to the other side. Shrunk so much it was messing with my head.

I thought i jacked up my shoulder in 2011. Walked into an mri center, gave them 300 bucks or close to it, got my image same day, brought it to a chiro buddy of mine who sent it to a friend who could interpret the image, and gave me the green light to keep doing what I do a week later when he got around to it.

I agree to ice it and take nsaids. If it starts feeling better mild stretching unless your doc said not to.

I remember when mine popped. Bad news. I was stretching it out the next day and that was some crazy pain. I was also walking around on it. My pt later said it was good in my case that I had done that. So i would say listen to your doc but you know how your knee is feeling. Bromelain helps with swelling too. Goodluck.

How is the pain and swelling compared to immediately after the injury? Are you able to bend it any better?

Swellings not bad. Just a little bit compared to the other knee.

Still very tight and I haven't tried to force bend it. I can bend it up to 90 degrees or so. Doc says body is guarding the knee a lot right now, doesnt like movement.

Trained upper body today and did some unilateral leg work (other leg). Used mostly machines so was okay thankfully.

I did. Acl,mcl the first time right knee same symptoms as you. Got tripped up blitzing full force loud pop leg buckled after that. Never swole up much at all but it got so stiff I couldn’t bend it much the next day. The other knee blew up logging running down a steep hillside over fell and buck timber. Full lcl. Big open surgery.

Damn, sorry to hear.

What did you do for the first knee? Surgery and then rehab? How long before you could return back to normal activity?
