I was told by a guy at a supp shop that L-theanine is the only supplement out that will actually lower cortisol levels. He said to take it before bed and 2x per day if you can battle with the tiredness it gives yah. What do you guys think?

He may actually be correct. Theanine helps reduce/relieve stress, we do know that stress will produce cortisol as will hard training (physical stress). So if the effects of L theanine reduces the levels then it makes sense. Cortisol will inhibit muscle growth so the less you have the better. Vitamin C is also purported to buffer cortisol level too. In Higher amounts >5000mg/day it is said to lower or reduce the effects of cortisol in your body!!

^^^ this is interesting. I take 3000mg daily. I wonder if i should up it to 5. Any harm on that high of vitamin C daily?

No, I have taken as high as 8000 per day with no probs at all. I mainly do this come contest prep. I read that big Ronnie used around 10,000 a day. It does supress cortisol in higher amounts. What you body does not use you will pee out. All this does is keep your concentrationd High in your system all the time and I believe that is the key to cortisol suppression!

thats awesome. I thought you could get kidney probs from too much vit C but I presume if you drink enough water you will be fine. I like to take one Airborn before I workout(to help not get colds) which has 1g in it, so i'll take another 1g with breakfast, lunch, dinner and before bed.

Yes, water is the key to almost everything we choose to do as far as supps go. The more water you drink the better off you are.

Why do you want to lower your cortisol? Is there something wrong with your cortisol levels?

Do you spread the dose out? Like 2g every 3-4 hours?

Author L Rae SWEARS by Vitamin C @ 5,000 mgs first thing in the am (NOT spread throughout the day) to blunt cortisol "spikes." There is some research supporting this theory. I'll see if I can find it again!

PS: Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin and therefore cannot harm you (even in excess)! Water soluble vitamins are NOT stored in the liver and any "excess" is just eliminated (pissed out). Fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) should be avoided in excess as they can reach toxic levels in the liver!

Disregarding whether Vitamin C works for this purpose I still wonder why you'd want to blunt it, especially if you don't know if you have a "problem" with cortisol. And the morning rise in cortisol is important. Not necessarily something you should want to stop.
