Does Lantus have to be refridgerated? What if you keep it at room temp?

Yes it does. They keep all insulin (in the USA) in the refridgerator at the pharmacy and the package says to refridgerate.

Thats right. Keep it refrigerated.

it needs to be refridgerated, but what happens if you left it in a closet for a couple months and forgot about it?

Apparently insulin can last at 87 degrees for up to a month. I am slightly confused on this topic as well, as I have a bottle of Humalog that I bought about 4 or 5 months ago, and haven't refrigerated it once. I keep my room ridiculously cool, multiple fans that are on all day (I sweat like a bitch so I keep my room icey haha) and I keep it in a dark cabinet away from any light or heat. I have been used it again recently and it still works. Yet everything I have read online tells me it shouldn't. Hmm.

If the vial is NOT opened, it will last until the expiration date if kept refrigerated. If opened, it will last about 30 days, actually more it loses its potency though. However, if it is not more than room temperature it is best to keep it out of the fridge and just in a shady place so it wont go bad; it hurts less when injecting it this way also.
I hope this helps.

Is what happens is eventually the insulin gets broken down. The fastest way is after use bacteria gets into the vial(breaking down the insulin) as the B.A. only works so well. Heat or warmth speed up this process.Unopened obviously it will last longer.

also lantus(long acting) and very short acting seem to break down quicker than standard insulin.Insulin isn't as fragile as HGH but is fragile and doesn't last like sex hormones suspended in oil.
