Takes forever to update something as simple as windows updates. My laptop has been trying to update 3 simple updates from windows. 3! Right now I am stuck on #2 for more than an hour. Laptop says not to shut down untill all updates are down, but shit. This has been more than an hour now.

Laptop is about a 1 year old. Came with windows 7. No probelms ever with it, except the restart and very slow updating stuff. I can shut down and boot up normally. But when I try to restart it, it goes through all the motions and just after the windows logo shows up. I get a black (or blue) screen with the cursor hung up in the top left side. I have to do a hard shut down and then boot back up and it works. Getting really annoying. I read something about the "BIOS" or something is that correct?

Any help would be gretaly appreciated. Any questions, please ask.

Is it slow doing everything, or just the Windows updates?

When it gets the blue screen, is there text on the screen, or just the cursor? Normally the blue screen is the BSOD (blue screen of death), but it will tell you there was an error and it will give you an error code.

Just the black screen with a blinking cursor could be a BIOS issue.

Try to let it finish the updates if possible.

You can try a system restore (if it's enabled) and restore it back to a previous date before you started having the problems. Did the problems start recently?

Worst case, you can do a repair install if you have the Windows disk for it.

It's God punishing you for having too many photos on your hard drive. And not sharing them with me. Amen.

Not sure how cmd prompt works in Win 7, but if you could run "msconfig" in the command prompt you could see what processes/programs load on startup. Uncheck any that are unnecessary. View processes running next time before you shut down (CTRL + ALT + DELETE, use task manager) to see if anything weird is running that may be eating memory. Check BIOS drivers; if all else fails, back up files and re-format.

Scan the computer, it could be malware or a virus. Malware Bytes & Avira are free I highly recommend them.

system is not slow at all. only hangs up during restart and because of this i feel the updates take forever.

I knew i would finally get the pitch fork of death stuck in my ass one day! :D

Gonna have to check the bios drivers for sure.

No viruses ever. I'm really anal about that stuff. (little homo) :p

After you get it started up, try doing a system restore. Restore it back to when it worked correctly.

I am assuming you can now view your desktop, correct?

  1. Download System Update Readiness Tool from Microsoft, click here.
  2. Run the program and click “Yes” when asked to run the Hotfix.
  3. Shut down your laptop.
  4. Restart your laptop, it should re-trigger your laptop to download and install any Windows Update without any hiccups.

As others already mentioned you may want to try a system restore to before any issues or backup, then reinstall Windows as your last option.
