who has them?

I find this the hardest possible pose to learn everything else I can look at pics of pro's doing then look in the mirrior and get it right except that spread. Not even close to getting it right.

Who has what....lats or a good lat spread??? Only joking. Here is a tip. get your new camera set up and do some front and rear lat spreads for us. The put them up and lets give you some pointers. You are correct in that it is one of the harder poses to get right and make it look good. But until we can see what you are doing wrong it is hard to say. The most common mistake is hand placement. As in too far around to the front of the midsection. and shoulders rounded forward or hunched over. Put up some footage and let's go from there!

i always think to throw my elbows forward and to pull my scapula apart. be sure to suck the stomach in.
 
the judges are sitting down a few feet from you so you want to make sure you are posing to them and not the audience...the front lat spread........ like oldfella said most will put thier hand way too far in fromt of thier abs, you want to put them on the sides adn push in on your obliques, this will make the waist smaller and the delts and arms will show more defination from action of pushing on your sides...fill your chest with a good breath of air and try to keep your elbows hands and shoulders all aligned on the same plane (think of lying face down on a piece of glass and hitting this pose, everything should be on the same plane) hope this helps....

the rear lat spread is diffacult as well, i would do kinda the same thing as the front but get a camera and have someone take pics with you moving around a bit untill you find what looks best... everyones physiques is different so thier is no cookie cutter instructions for the poses....

Ok SQ, From these pics I'd say what you need to do is from the rear shot pull your elbows forward and think about pulling your shoulder blades out from each other. As Kenny said pull in a big breath as you do this. Then rock backwards slightly on the trailing leg and push in on your sides. You can do whatever you like with your facial expressions with the rear spread since the judges can't see you. Squeeze the glutes and lower back as you hit this pose. From the front and this is the hard one cause you are in full view of the judges so facial expression counts. But start by hooking your thumbs into the back of your obliques and roll your fists into your sides. Pull the shoulders forward to accent the spread but do not hunch. Pull the shoulder blades out as hard as you can and think lat pulldown. Keep your chest up and concentrate on those shoulder blades being pulled apart.
One way to get your hands in the right posi is to feel around your lower back/sides for the lat insertions It is there that you want to hook your thumbs in and roll your fists forward into your sides from there. This is a tough pose but once you hit it correctly you will smile because it is one of the classic awesome physique displays you can master. Practice, practice, practice. You'll get there.
