Legpress vs Squat
What do you guys feel is the best excerise when it comes to develop thickness and mass in the legs?

And do you prefer ass to the grass squats or heavy partial or parallel squats??

Or heavy short leg presses or leg presses all the way down until the sled can get any lower?

Right now Im doing dropset legpress.
First I begin with heavy partial leg presses then I drop weight and go lower and drop more and go lower until My legs feel like they are going to explode.

Well, my favorite always has been heavy barbell squats to parallel. Since my leg injury (torn vastus lateralis), those have pretty much become a thing of the past for me. Squats built the best mass and strength for me. Recently been doing leg presses full range of motion with medium-heavy weights, but a few days ago I had a killer leg workout with Kronium, and I think I might stick to that routine for a while...First we hit some leg extensions, then we did a whole bunch of sets of heavy full range leg presses. By that time I could already feel the tweak in my injured leg, but decided that I would keep working through it. Next we hit some smith machine squats. After my leg almost gave out with a plate on each side, Kronium suggested half squats, and we went up to 405 and boy, I can still feel it now! Definitely something to try out. Hope it helps.

squats
maybe im just an old timer, but the fact is that the basic compound movements make you grow more than anything else. sometimes they suck, very hard, but you have to do them to grow. look at some of the legends in the game, tom platz did not get his legs from pressing. arnold did not get his chest from flyes or machines. dillet did not get his shoulders from laterals....dorian did not get his back from hyper=extensions. i could go on, but the fact is that the best bb's in the world spent alot of time under the heavy weights....squating, deadliftiing, bench presses, millitary presses, even the old clean and presses. these compound heavy movements, although killers, force....read that again, force your body to grow. the greater the trauma to the muscle the greater the growth, keep your diet and rest in line along with proper supplements and you will have to grow....no choice. sorry if i sounded like an asshole,,but hate seeing the "classics" forgoten.....to answer your question....deep squats....heavy....are the best for legs....no f**ing question.

remember the old days back in hschool where the coaches made you do box squats....what a waste! LOL! I used to squat, but now i'm lazy and do mostly leg presses, but i do go very heavy on those. I think i may try sqauting monday. My latest craze is doing front squats on the smith machine...wow!

I completely agree with Pumpit, for mass you can't beat compound exercise's, and nothing will make your legs grow like getting in the rack.

I like squats

But I seem to really thicken my lower back and waist when I do them....My ass also grows on squats..on legpress only legs grow...So I like to vary them...

I hurt my back doing heavy squats with incorrect form when I was a teenager and now even if i squat 135lbs my lower back tightens up and gets stiff. I have to do leg presses as they do not aggrivate my lower back to the point I cannot get up the next morning in pain like squats do.

i love squats, i did hate them when my football coach made me do sets of 25 but overall i think squats are better, i think some guys get obsessed with weight load up the sled and do partail reps ( i'm not a fan of partail reps on anything) thats just my opinion

leg press baby

squats have shown through time to be the most effectsive for overall leg development, no argument here, but I hate them! Low back pain, to much movement. Leg presses are my favorite for leg mass, especially for that outside sweep. man Make it heavy and lift it, I feel them the best and I can control that movement so you can effectively/efficiently target the vastus lateralus the most. You'll never see me do anything other then a the leg press or hack squats unless I do a front like squat on the smith machine.
G :D

my lower back just cannot take the squatting. i hit heavy leg extension, presses, and hacks and get great overall results without the lower back pains. i think it's all about focus and what you find that works better for you!

I do squats at the end of my workout...what a bad ass pump it gives(no punn intended), and it also allows me to keep the weight low so I don't go to heavy and build my waist line up.

Leg workout:
Hack Squats
Leg Curls
Leg Ext.
Straight leg DL
Squats

Calves

I used to have a buldging disc and I could not get the bar on my back without it killing me...I rehabed myself and now I can squat and do other movements with no pain. Just a bit of information incase you do not have any insurance and you need some rehab stuff for your lower back.

i love leg press. i can't walk for the next 3 days and the looks that you get when you fill the machine with all the plates

I see people fill that sucker up and do partial reps...God I hate that...especially when they grunt in the 1" movement.

Not saying anyone here does this...just like to state some of the off the wall things I see in the gym. I can understand heavy partial now and then, but not every leg workout.

I am a huge fan of the squat. I have been doing squats since the 11th grade (about 12yrs). Granted have had long periods of not lefting due to injuries and drug abuse (I do not use drugs anymore). Squatting has always added size the fastest to my legs. The only thing I do not like about them is I can not do deads of any kind in the same week due to lower back stiffness.

Squats

I did squats for yrs best for overall development and front squats as well. I rarely see anyone do fronts squats but man they are great they'll give that tear drop everyone lacks as an amature.
I used to do real heavy squats my best was 705 but now I only do around 400 because squats give a beating to the knee joints and ligs.

Hey Riv and Steak partials definitely have a place in your rep scheme. Ask Mike Matarazo, Shawn Ray, Flex Wheeler, some people think your showing off if you do heavy partials but they have a reason and can thicken up areas you need to thicken.

...

i prefer squats

especially with a safety squat bar...

it allows me to concentrate on my legs instead of anything else.

depends on...

how my knees are feeling. If my knee joints are hurting (and I can usually tell just by sitting down and tapping on the knee cap with my knuckles), then I go for leg presses, as I can adjust my foot position (put them higher up on the press) and take some stress off my knees. If my knees feel good, then I go for the squat rack. Typically, I'll do them both if my knees feel really good. In terms of results, I think squats are prolly more effective overall, as others here have said.
