Well we all know this sport is evoling, but HOW. What changes are happening exactly. Let discuss in every aspect. Diet, Gear, Training, Drugs.

I can tell you many athletes decades ago didn't mess w/ GH,IFG, MFG, ect... I can also tell you they looked pretty amazing, do you agree?

well

i think is has to do with different diets and training techniques. The drugs of nowadays arent that different what those guys used, ok maybe HGH/slin. But even that was availabe. Dont know if they used it. And i truly dont believe in the effectiveness of all the crazy peptides people are using. None of them used ONLY the peptide and nothing else. So who knows if is was the peptide.
But i do think that diets changed very much and the way people train nowadays. They were the genetic freaks of their time, and human kind doesnt evolve in 20 years to produce even more genetic freaks.
I just think smarter training/dieting has to do with it.
Crazy dosages were common even in Arnold's days were D-boll was widely available

ok I might be way out of line but back in the70's and early 80's the prize $$$$ wasnt shit so why would these guys train and eat themselfs to 300 lbs then diet down for 14 weeks to win a few thousand bucks???? Not saying the prize $$$ is any better now with higher taxes, food prices and all that but today everyone wants to see a freak!! so the more we are gonna push towards that if this offends anyone SORRY but that is the way I see it because I'm one who enjoys seeing the280 plus fraeks on stage not to say the shape and the classic lines of the 70-90's is bad but we all love freaks!!

I love the classic shape.... things have changed alot and it is mainly to do with the different drugs. U cannot go past those classic bodies they are amazing :)

I have to admit that back in the early 90s when I first got into bodybuilding, I enjoyed seeing the "freaks" get bigger and bigger. However, as I attended more and more shows, it became disappointing to me to see a herd of cattle coming out on the stage instead of nicely refined physiques.

As I prepared to compete myself, I realized that pushing my body to those dimensions was not something I considered good looking. This might just be a personal preference, and trust me, I still admire the commitment and work that it takes for the pros to push themselves to those proportions. However, when I saw Ronnie Coleman a few years ago, I decided I wasn't that interested in attending the pro shows any more.

I went to a couple of natural shows, but was also disappointed in the lack of fullness and development that I saw there. I kind of stuck to the national qualifiers where there were big guys, but not the "cattle" that didn't seem to look like something attainable and balanced.

Again, I do admire the work that the pros put into their bodies. I know from years of working out, powerlifting, and trying to get into bodybuilding shape what it takes to go that far. I just decided to put up my opinion since a poster made mention of how "we all love freaks".

i think the 60's were an interesting time as well with the likes of reg park..etc... for the lack of information and ergogenic aids he put together a hell of a package im no expert but the general training philosophy has changed pretty consistently... add to that a plethora of new drugs and mix in some serious diet information updates and you have todays freaks.. honestly i love the more proportioned body of the 70's and 80's but there are a few on the current stage that are worth following as well...

It looks like his obliques got bigger. Also he was in his 40's in the 70's, so in the 00's puts him in his 70's, not too bad. I think the look back in that era looked more athletic, healthier even

How about this...???

In the past guys use to train with more volume...So they didnt train as heavy (yes they train heavy, but not Dorin heavy or Coleman heavy) and didnt get as big as the guys now...Waist, thickness, legs, ect,ect...I think when Yates came out with training Heavy duty, and with that thickness..Guy started to train alot heavier and with less volume...So along with more drugs, GH, slin, ect....They got bigger, and bigger...I also believed that guys ate waaaay more food now, then they use to in the 70,80, and 90's....I dont know for sure, but it's just a guess...Then again I could be waaaaay off base here...LOL !!!!

sergs @ 70 in that pifc??

most jacked 70 year old ive ever seen

lol...pretty sure dave meant 1970s, on a side note he still looks awesome 30 yrs later

damn 30 years and barely any sign of aging. WHat an immortal.

from what i read they didnt have even exotic roids like tren and eq.. just test, dbol deca.. And some people did train just heavy, like mike mentzer.. Either way.. Great freaking physique.

I think that generation looked a lot better than todays

The 70's generation were in the classic form of the greek tradition but with more muscle. An enhanced statue of David. The guys now resemble mutants - other worldly creatures. This is the view of the general public - whether it is articulated or not - this is how 99 percent of people see bodybuilders now. It's a guteral reaction. Now the reasons for this evolution from Greek god to mutation is that it's also the comptetive nature to continually push the limits of difficulty. Too bad this sport has pushed past the fringe of normalcy.

The tools for this evolution as I see it:

1) Higher steriod dosages, namely testosterone and other androgenic compounds like tren.
2) The use of HGH.
3) The use of insulin - this could be the biggest contributer to the overall size increase.
4) Bones increase in size to support the load placed on it just as muscle does. The increased strength and heavier weights also increase bone size.
5) Let's not forget the striated glutes (forgive my spelling). I believe Rich Gaspari started this requirement. Big shift in look there. The 70's guys were ripped but they weren't on the edge of dehydration.
6) Finally - the judging has awarded these trends over the years. The judges ultimately set the goals and decide on the physique of bodybuilding.

In order for this sport to regain a popular appeal again - the judges have to award physiques that are not on the edge of death due to lack of water. Exageration - but normal people see these bodies and instinctively know they are completely unnaturally muscular and starved at the same time - and it freaks them out - it's instinctive - they just get freaked immediately. In the 70's people were in awe but not scared of the bodybuilders.

Truth here.

With total respect to todays monsters, I always liked the look of the 70's 80's bbers. These guys looked strong, they were big but not overly so. Yes the people like to look at freaks, but remember that back then those guys were the freaks, but they looked good. Very asthetic looking physiques.

The judgeing at shows (pro level) needs to change to bring this sport back down to a realistic level. They keep awarding mass over symmetry and thus pushing the athletes to get even bigger next time around, What the sport needs now is a level of refinement of the current physique. Ripped and dry, well yes, keep it that way but start knocking down the distended abs and bloated gut, start picking on out of proportion body parts and less symmetry and start getting back to the overall package of a great looking physique.

These guys will still look freaky, but a much more appealing freaky. I really do not blame the drugs, I blame the judges for allowing body building to slip from beauty and grace to mass and freak show. The athletes are only responding to what the judges are asking for. Change the judgeing and you will change the image!
