Lets talk umbilical hernias

I had mine fixed like a year ago. Mine started small and continued to get bigger, more noticeable, and more painful. Especially when wearing a weight belt. Plus for competing I knew I needed it fixed. Had it fixed laparoscopically. I was out of gym for 2 weeks. Then back slowly. Was like a little vacation. Best decision I made

Trained and competed with my umbilical hernia(before I was diagnosed). Couldn't do nearly the amount of cardio I wanted and deadlifts and deep squats were out. Was very painful. 3 weeks post surgery today. 21% healed.

I waited over 5 years to have mine fixed. The doctor told me I could wait longer, but if it became suddenly painful it could become septic in a matter of hours so I should get to the emergency room fast if that happened.

When I had it fixed, he told me to stay out of work (office job) for a week (I was back in 48 hours) because of the medicine (some type of codeine pain killer) which I stopped taking after a day and a half. He said no weight lifting for a month. I started light weights after a month, and a couple months later, now I am doing full weights again. :headbang:

I am glad I took care of it, because it had started to get worse a couple months before the operation.

I had the surgery a couple of years ago with the mesh and all. The recovery period as far as pain was short lived like a couple weeks if that. The worst part was not training at all for a few months. See this was the second time. The first time the doc did not use mesh and I started training two months later and it happened again so I made sure to wait four months. After that I just trained upper body. No legs for a year and just started dead lifting again after two years post hernia surgery. I hit 350 a few months back and irritated the mesh. I thought I tore the mesh at first but I had it checked and it was fine. I used to deadlifts 700 but I am nervous about tearing the mesh so I just do lots of reps now with lighter weight

Me too. I pull off the floor and i can feel the mesh pulling. It hurts.

I was dieting for a show back in the 90's and my belly botton popped out, I thought I was just really ripped. Well it never went back in and I found I was always pushing in my button witht he knot above it. A friend of mine has his fixed back then because his doc said he could die if his intestines wrapped around whatever(????) thought it was crap but the wife made me get it checked out and was told if it doesn't hurt don't worry about it. Its been about 18 years and yes it does bother me sometimes and have at times considered the surgery.
My question to the guys who have had it. Do they go in through the belly button and how is the scaring? Also kind of nervous about the wide ranges of recovery times back to the gym here.
