My brother in law is an alcholic, has hepatitis C and has one kidney. The doctor says his liver is dead. I asked my wife find out what his liver values are and maybe someone on this board could tell us what is going on. The doctor said what are you talking about. As far I know, he does have a spot on his liver but no one will tell us how this organ is functioning. Could someone please help me and tell what to look for and detetrmine how bad this is.

Lol, dumb doctor... Has your bro had blood work done lately?

Ok , alcoholism and Hep C are a bad combo that will lead to cirhosis of the liver. Liver enzymes really don't say much and here is why. When you have a 100% healthy liver and it starts to get damaged for whatever reason, the cells die and release the enzymes which makes your lab values go higher and higher and higher. But here is the kicker, at some point when you are approaching cirhosis, so many cells have died that there are no more to die to release more enzymes so your lab values actually start to go down.

Some patients at end stage liver cirrhosis have normal AST and ALT levels cause their liver has turned into a rock. This is why there are other labs we look at and more important we do liver biopsies that actually show how bad the damage is at cellular level. If he is an alcoholic he automatically loses candidacy for liver transplant.

Post whatever you get and i will try to chime in tomorrow.

Get him on some Synthergine immediately. First thing I would do is find a new doctor or someone who can tell you exactly whats going on with his liver.

Spot on. Particular lab tests that would be helpful to know are albumin level, PT/INR, and bilirubin. I can't imagine a doc would make a statement like, "his liver is dead" without these values + ultrasound imaging, etc. Unfortunately Hep C + Alcohol is no joke and can easily lead to cirrhosis.
