Long-term CPAP Intolerance Issue

Alright fellas here is the deal. Started CPAP therapy about 3-4 years ago after running a sleep study that put me at about 21 AHI. The first 1-2 years were amazing: 8+ hours of sleep with mask on nearly every night. Then, out of the blue, I started ripping the mask off about 30-40 min into sleep every night. I only get more than 1 hour with it on if I wake up to go to bathroom and am coherent enough to throw it back on when I go back to bed.

Fast forward to end of last year: ran another sleep study. This time I registered at 5 AHI, indicating I no longer need it. That being said, I still snore when I sleep on my back and the wife hates me for it.

I have tried everything:

• switching from AutoPAP to CPAP mode
• switching pressure ranges (higher highs/lower highs/smaller ranges/greater ranges)
• turning EPR on/off
• different sleeping positions
• different types/brands of masks

At times I do get longer sleep with it on. Weird thing is that if I take an afternoon nap on a weekend, I have no problem keeping it on for 2+ hours.

Anyone out there experience this? I have gone about eliminating everything I could possibly think of as a factor - down to my mattress.

How's your sleep hygiene? Meaning the whole Monty dark room soft noise cool room any sleep supplements? Any changes in training time closer to bed or highly stimulating AAS or fatburners etc.
I would also recommend grounding sheets. I hit the pillow and lights out for 8 hours. Any recent stressors in your life?

Stop ripping the mask off.

Why are you taking it off?

If its uncomfortable, try changing the mask size/type etc... Address that and maybe you won't rip it off anymore.

Ive changed mask types and sizes, as I mentioned in my original post. I am not waking up and ripping the mask off - this is occurring unknowingly in my sleep. Something is happening in that first half hour that is causing me to pull it off.

Sleep hygiene has remained static for years. I always get to sleep as much as I want to and always in bed by 8-9pm. Sleep supplements I have been on for at least 5 years include: 5htp, vitamin b6 & b5, magnesium, zinc, and melatonin. If anything life has gotten less stressful. Huge promotion at work - less work, more money. Earned 2 college degrees. Things are just amazing and I have very minimal stress. This shit is occuring on and off cycle. Does not matter what stuff I am on, if I am cutting or bulking. I cannot seem to find a pattern leading back to a direct cause. I live a very structured life by choice and nothing ever changes unless i am traveling.

I prop a big pillow against my back and it helps me to sleep on my side all night. I take it you are only snoring on your back? And the mask when on stops the snoring when you are on your back?

Yup, I've started doing that because it helps...and i have a tendency to roll ontop of the wife 😂. Still rip it off BUT I dont snore while on my side

Fook it I build a soft board partition in the middle of the bed lol. Removable of course if the wife wants to get frisky in the middle of the night. Ha. Seriously hope you get some relief soon.

Hey man, I really appreciate your input. I am currently experimenting with the SnoreRX mouthguard too - works very well, BUT I pull that shit out as well. A lot more comfortable than having a hose and a contraption from the alien movie attached to your head but the problem is when I toss it in my sleep it's way harder to find than the face mask LOL. Dentist offers a custom anti-snoring mouth guard but insurance won't cover it and they want $2,000 for it and I believe it has to be replaced every year it's stupid

Have you tried pulling the sleep data and see what goes on when it happens ?
I had a couple nights where i woke up and felt like i wasent getting any air at all and choking hard, took out the data and i could see that the machine had overlooked a small incident that then became hyuuge and it couldnt ramp air pressure fast enough.

You make a great point- I have not. I had the Sleep specialist pulled the data when I went late last year because I knew something was wrong and she said there was nothing from what she could see. I have the ResMed Airsense 11. Has an SD card slot but no SD card in it - uses a SIM card to transmit metric.

How did you do it on yours and what kind of software did you use to analyze the raw data? Also - what did you do to mitigate the issue? I have definitely had a few occasions a month where I wake up feeling like I'm not getting enough air so maybe that could be the cause for sure. Absolutely worth it looking into this if you don't mind sending me info and how you want about it and how you fixed it

I had my friend do it, he is my tech nerd guy, mine is an airsense 10, i do believe Resmed has free software on their site that makes it so you can get the data yourself. For me all i had to do was to increase my starting pressure a little that helped.

this is my go to channel for cpap info btw

Lol man I used the same guy to show me how to get into the clinical settings on mine to adjust pressure ranges. Dude has found a hell of a niche for a youtube channel.

Hey man thank you so much! I will be looking into this!

Got it all set up today... time to split some hairs lol. This was just a 1 minute test run to make sure I can actually do this.

When I first got my CPAP, I tended to rip it off also. It was just annoying. Over time, I got past that and haven't had a single issue with it since. I can definitely notice a difference when I use it compared to when I didnt.

I've had my CPAP for close to 10 years now and no intolerance issue at all

Yeah man idk wtf happened with me. First 2 years were no problem at all then I started to not tolerate it out of the blue. Im dead set on finding the cause

I love my cpap and can’t imagine sleeping without it. Not only did it resolve my snoring issue but I actually grew quite a bit as well due to finally recovering fully. I have the resmed airsense and their travel mini. Started with just the nose pillow which sucked, as I knew it would, but they insisted to start with that. Immediately went to a full face mask and had no problem adjusting to it. Only issue is the memory foam eventually wears out and it’ll start to leak, causing you to synch the head straps tighter but pretty minor gripe.
