Yeah the math isn’t mathing on that. Where’s the complex carbs? Dude just ate lean protein, eggs and fruit? He was able to maintain 280 pounds of lean mass on THAT diet? His dinner must have been massive.
Magazine probably wrote it for him.For those who like bodybuilding history…attached are his lifts, diet, and training program precontest circa 1973.
I remember being at Golds Gym just after they relocated to Santa Monica from Venice Beach and Bill Reynolds (RIP), I remember him interviewing several bodybuilders after they worked out in the gym. Ghost riding for sure, altering facts and figures I have no clue.Magazine probably wrote it for him.
I remember at a Shawn Ray seminar back in 89 he told us all that the magazine wrote the workouts, etc that they published - not him.
Ironically a few years later I was writing his scripts for American Muscle Magazine TV, so there we are.
I love seeing these old articles because that's my favorite era in bodybuilding but never believe anything you read in any article associated with Joe Weider LMAO. Those measurements are pretty sus. Most of those golden era guys said themselves anything Weider wrote about them was complete bullshit. They took his money and in return they let him write whatever about them and let him break his arms jerking himself off about his "Weider Training System". C'est la vieFor those who like bodybuilding history…attached are his lifts, diet, and training program precontest circa 1973.
You're probably the only person here who lived in California during those years and saw the golden era firsthand. Write as much as you can about it, because these are great anecdotes. You've written a lot about it already, but the more the merrier!I met Lou at World Gym just after it opened. Got a funny story to tell one of these days about Lou.
This would be a great thread!I think I might just start a new thread called The Golden Era. I hope I am not the only one that will contribute to that thread. We got a lot of great members here so fingers crossed, I don’t want it to just be about me.
Lats I believe was around a bunch of world-class bodybuilders. He has shared some of experiences here. I think he was around a little later than I was and has some wonderful stories. He was “in”a little deeper than I, I was mostly an innocent bystander, a lurker so to speak but I met heaps of these guys, saw many many of them train so I can give a lot of observations and a little bit of behind the scenes.
Forgive me if I do a bunch of cut and paste on this topic I wrote years ago after I joined, but I think a lot of new members might enjoy some of the stories for the first time.
I just did a quick search and it looks like the early posts do not show up when I do a search going back that far. This would be a great thread!

Those protein shakes back then probably tasted like rotten fish and ass. This article proves how long these magazines have been feeding the general public straight![]()
Breakfast: four eggs and water
Noon: fish and fruit
Afternoon: lean meat
Dinner: lean meat and vegetables
Bedtime: protein shake
I remember my Weider shakes from the late 80s even. Those protein shakes back then probably tasted like rotten fish and ass.
