Viator said Mentzer was a liar on his 1 set bs said when he trained with Mike he did 5 to 6 times the volume he claimed in his courses.
I don’t know why I find it funny that they felt the need to mention he had water at breakfast with the eggs. This article proves how long these magazines have been feeding the general public straight![]()
Breakfast: four eggs and water
Noon: fish and fruit
Afternoon: lean meat
Dinner: lean meat and vegetables
Bedtime: protein shake
They forgot the “on an empty stomach “I don’t know why I find it funny that they felt the need to mention he had water at breakfast with the eggs.
sounds about right... if you could ever find this and post it as a reel with full video it would go viral. every time I talk to guys younger than me they're always going on about mentzer and i'm always trying to tell them this is such bsThe 1000 to 2000 cal diets were commonplace back then. Rather they followed it that was a different story.
Mike Mentzer posted his journal back in articles back then. I grew up reading about bodybuilding in those older magazines. My dad would bring them home in boxes from yard sales. Mid 1990s we were cleaning out the old offices at a health spa they were remodeling then. We found an old beta vcr tape that was a seminar with Casey Viator and Chris Dickinson somebody converted it to vhs and was kinda cool. I have all of Mikes books including Heavy Duty Journal along with a bunch of his vintage articles and nowhere at any time did he ever claim all he did was one set LOL. He just believed the true growth happened in the last, most intensive set. If you are an advanced bodybuilder and strong as all fuck it would be pretty reckless to not do at least 3-4 warmup/workup sets before taking yourself beyond failure with negatives and forced reps on a super heavy compound exercise. And he used multiple exercises for each body part. He wrote articles himself saying him and Ray sometimes experimented with 2 heavy work sets per exercise in addition to the warmup.sounds about right... if you could ever find this and post it as a reel with full video it would go viral. every time I talk to guys younger than me they're always going on about mentzer and i'm always trying to tell them this is such bs
you old ass fuckerCasey is correct. I have witnessed both of them training (not together, separately, different times). Mike and his brother did multiple sets. And Mike said that he made his best gains training four days a week.
In the book “3 More Reps” by George Snyder and Rick Wayne, you get what is supposed to be a portion of a transcribed seminar that the Golden Era legends did at Olympus Gym in Pennsylvania as well as a Q and A, and in many cases, includes their routines. I have the book and enjoy it, and it seems as though it should be pretty truthful, but I’m curious if you’ve read it and can verify its veracity to any degree! I haven’t seen a whole lot of people talk about it.I remember being at Golds Gym just after they relocated to Santa Monica from Venice Beach and Bill Reynolds (RIP), I remember him interviewing several bodybuilders after they worked out in the gym. Ghost riding for sure, altering facts and figures I have no clue.

I think the first good tasting protein I ever experienced was Joe Weider’s Mega Mass 2000, circa 1992. It tasted like ass (that’s actually not true, my wife’s ass tastes like strawberries and sweet cream) compared to what we have today, but back then, that thing was gooooooood! For all the sugar it had, it should have tasted good!I remember my Weider shakes from the late 80s even.
