Mechanical drop set from Josh Bryant as intensifier

As I get back more into hypertrophy work I’ve had some fun adding in different intensifiers and exercises I haven’t done in a long time.

Josh Bryant the powerlifting coach from Metroflex is the only person I’ve seen mention a mechanical drop set. Basically just knock out your normal set to failure and adjust the movement to give you a more advantageous mechanical position. I did it here dropping the angle on incline db press twice until I was flat. Each time a few breaths in between as you adjust and then knock out more reps with the same weight.

Could do it with higher rom each time on leg press/squat, from upright to forward leaning dips, push up or row ladders on a smith/power rack. Nothing earth shattering and I have no clue on the science. Just something different and fun to help push hard.

Justin Harris showed how to do them with tricep extensions. Basically start with your hands wide then move them in closer

Not that I'm a fan of his, but Joe Bennett talks about these alot. Just another way to go past failure. Works well with a bro split.

Good idea but

Bad exercise choice for it. Your almost doing a combination rest pause with it lol

Yea I fking hate dumbells other than straight set. Hate cleaning them up too. Screw them damn power hooks too. Way too much effort getting them into place on a bar. I have done heavy ass free weight inclines and then scoot on over to the Smith and bang out more.

interested any links to Josh's content?
I can see a lot of options with the technique.
Sometimes on back day I will do an extended with lat pulldows. Front lat pulls for 6 to 8 then volume bar for 4 to 5 and then finish up with reverse for 3 to 4 reps. May not be the same thing but beats the hell out of the lats.

That set alone looked killer

It’s the exercise Josh uses as an example. Not sure what you mean. It’s as easy as getting up and sliding plates off. Db’s suck often but I’ve been up to 160x8 on incline and this was 110s paused in the hole. Way easier than 160s lol

That sounds kind of the same. JM did a wide neutral pulldown with an EFS multi grip where he’d start widest and come in each set. Same idea as what you’re describing it seems. I’ll try your method. What do you mean “volume bar”?

I worked with Josh years ago. He’s a great guy. His IG has most of his stuff.

V bar. LOL gosh damn AI .
Thanks for the post I got pull today, it's play day (medium intensity) too, so I got some room to mess around a bit and pump it up.

OK then you should probably be using 80's then

I love mechanical drops. Great way to use Prime equipment, e.g. my backoff on seated leg curl is something like 12-8-8 moving from mid to mid-lengthened to lengthened settings.

Also a good way to use machines with multiple ways to set up...not sure if there are any good examples other than Hammer. Just did a mechanical drop today on the iso row, moving from seated (shortened heavy) to step-back (lengthened heavy).

Not sure what you mean.

Maybe he meant that it's technically a rest pause set due to the maybe 12-15 second rest between drops. Not that there's anything wrong with RP. Mechanical drop sets are great. Rest pause is great too.

I friggin love this mechanical drop set to obliterate my triceps:
Skull crusher to failure, JM press to failure, close grip bench press to failure. No rests in between , same load.

80s? And do what 30 reps? You realize I cropped the video and that wasn’t all the reps? I did something like 12/7/6. And I was training alone. How much faster do you want me to go??

Actually just did v bar pulldowns. Forgot how good they are as I always do most of my pulldowns Yates style. I just adjusted the angle on the pull three times after resetting my position 3 times. One of my favorite combos for back thickness is a combo of BB rows deads and shrugs. I start with reverse grip bang out 6 reset to over had grip and bang out 4 reset add 25 to each side bang out 6 to 8 deads reset add another 25 each side and then shrug for 8. Wipes the entire backside out.

How am I suppose to no that?

Post the full video then

I guess I don’t see the need to be an ass over nothing. But you seem to take personal issue w the idea lol. I didn’t come up with it. Simply passing on an idea. If it isn’t for you no big deal don’t do it.

Whether it is a mechanical drop, weight drop or rest pause etc. i tend to think they accomplish the same thing for the most part. I doubt many will see a big difference in results if they did each of those for 6 months and compared results. Seems like it is just a different spin on things which is more of a mental change of pace to keep things interesting as i see it.

I like a similar one, skulls to failure, then cg press, then finish with deficit pushups. Crazy pump.
