Metformin - pros vs cons

Metformin is highly debated whether it is something that will end up helping or harming you.

It seems like the major con is its decrease in igf-1 levels. I forget the cause of this but it may just be because it decreases amount of insulin produced. Also if taken with insulin it could cause un-predictable drops in blood sugar. So taking it while using insulin is a bad idea. Are there any other cons to taking metformin?

I never really looked into it but ever since last year I've gotten free metformin
And was using it when I was injured and not training just to resensitize insulin receptors.

I still have a ton of it.

Anyways, the pros seem to be:
sensitize your insulin receptors
Prevent muscle breakdown through gluconeogenesis
Appetite suppressant (if dieting)

It blocks absorption of some carbohydrates, if I remember correctly but you could just eat less so it's not really a pro

At least that's what I can remember at the top of my head, at work right now, just making this thread so I can go back to it tonight and read the replies and discuss later

Are there any other pros/cons to metformin?

LOL. I didn't get the shits but it certainly messed with my digestive health and intestinal flora. My dumps changed and become looser and over time it started to kill my appetite similar to running A-bombs or D-bol to the point where I could barely get meals down. Once I dropped the metfomin and started running a good probiotic for a few weeks my appetite went back to normal, stools normalized, and I felt better overall.

Try taking after the meal instead before and also lower dosage and should go away over time

Cons:absolutely fucks my stomach. I've tried a bunch of times and never made it past like 3-4 days. I've got like 90 1000mg tablets in my pantry right now

I really like Dr Scott Stevenson's simple way of defining GDAs.

They're basically similar to cardio in a pill; their use is entirely dependant upon a person's physiology (which includes BG response to GH, ability to gain bf and maintaining good insulin sensitivity).

I can run 4 ius of good GH, and BG doesn't go about 88-90 in the morning. 12.5 mgs of MK for a few weeks, and we are creeping closer to 100.

Don't do cardio, cycle carbs on off days.

Metformin works great with me, keeps fasting bg low and slows fat gains tremndously for me. Goes with Mk677 hand in hand.

Bulk or cut, I use it.

Igf-1 decrease is very overblown.

Pros are greater than cons (besides stomach issues for some)

If you care about health, I'd be using it.

I feel like I'm one of the lucky few who doesn't get ANY stomach discomfort at ALL with metformin.

Either way, the longevity info on it is amazing AND it helps keep me insulin sensitive. Maybe if I was a shitting my pants I'd feel differently but who knows.

Just started mine again yesterday and dropped gh as my fasting bg was 100 and I don't like that.

Wait till Lats see's this. You're dead! :D

I think the lowering of IGF is bullshit. My IGF is always between 288-302 whether I'm on metformin or not. The shits went away after a few days to a week for me. Been on it so long that I forgot it even did that at this point. Only thing I wonder is if metformin is the cause of my burping problem.

Do you feel it's helped you keep better blood sugar numbers? What's your average fasted reading? I'm also wondering what dosages are people doing this, considering certain side affects become an issue at higher dosages.

I don't think it did THAT much for my A1C levels. My fasted readings are kind of all over the place. I've seen 80 and I've seen over 100. However my A1C went from 5.2 to 4.9 recently and I wonder if it's from adding Avmacol. Telmisartan also seems it might have helped my A1C...metformin dose is 1000mg. Used to use up to 2000mg and lowering the dose didn't alter my A1C in any way.
