This has nothing to do with aas but alot of you bring valuable info to the board about other topics so maybe one might beable to help me out. My wife,35 years "young" has been suffering from migraines since the birth of our son 10 years ago. She is currently on Imitrex tablets/shots and Relpax and at times seem to do nothing for the pain. Otc meds. do absolutly nothing either. If you know of anything that is out there or something that works thats not medication related then please let us know. I have never experienced the pain that one brings on but I know it's bad when she is banging her head with her hands or against the wall for temporary relief. Whats even worse is our boy has them also but otc meds. work for him. Your info is greatly apperciated!

My wife has the same problem. She has the toradol inj and Relpax. The Relpax works the best but is very expensive if you dont have ins. (35$ a tab) She is also on birth control with out the suger pill, trying to regulate her hormone levels.

She has a PHD in bio chem, I will have her post under my name later to give you some help.

damn sorry to hear,
im know exactly what your wife is going through.i have had migraines since i turned 18 and for years i had nothing to treat them.im also sorry to say that nothing short of barbituates and codeine is going to do a damn thing.you can try some ergotamine(that worked for me)but you shouldnt use that more than a couple times a week.the imitrex meds dont work for everyone(me included)if your wife has a doctor willing to help her than she should ask for fioricet with codeine.this is what i have to take when i get a migraine.trust me that you should be thankful that you dont know the pain of these things.as of yet i have not found anything else to combat migraines and if someone on here has more to add im listening too.
later

ps.i tried toradol once in pill form and it didnt help and until i get insurance i wont be taking anything thats $35 a tab:(

I've had migraines my whole life although for whatever reason I get them much less as I have gotten older.
Imitrex does nothing for me.
I use Fiorinal with Codeine, 2 capsules right at start of headache. It works wonders. You get the bonus of a good buzz too.

This is Tap's wife.

I have migraines that astonish even my doctors. It sounds as if your wife's migraines definitely have a hormonal component. Since they did not start until after the birth of your son (a huge hormonal storm), she has a really good chance they will go away in about ten years. I am referring to the menopause storm.

Until then, however, she has a ton more options than even ten years ago.

You did not mention how often your wife gets headaches, or if they seem related to her menstrual cycle, so I will speak in generalities here. If she wants more info, she could certainly post back, and maybe I could give her an idea or two that she hasn't heard yet.

Birth control pills may help the "period migraine". Recent literature supports the safety of only having one period every three months. You take the active pills for three straight months without taking the placebo at the bottom row. That eliminates 2 out of 3 period migraines, which should help a bit.

As for the rest of the month, she should know that whatever she takes, she should use each particular remedy only about twice a week. More frequent use will buy you a "rebound headache", which means that your medicine will start causing more headaches than you would get on your own.

Imitrex is a nice medicine. Available as a pill, injection, or nasal spray. There are many other meds in the same category (called sumatriptans). They generally all work about the same. I like Zomig ZMTs (melt on your tongue) if she gets nausea with her migraines. Right now I use Relpax, because the relief comes a tiny bit faster than with the other sumatriptans.

I also use injectable Toradol. It gives me opiate size relief without making me dumb or having an addictive/tolerance quality. Not to be used with Motrin, Advil, etc. Lasts about eight hours.

I have tried and failed acupuncture, massage, and traditional chiropractics. I did, however, get some relief from a chiropractor that specializes in upper cervical care. These folks focus on the first two vertebrae in the neck. If your wife gets a very sore neck, or if she can push on the base of her head with her fingers and produce a migraine, she might think about trying it out. Have a deadline in mind, though, when you start. I said to myself that I would give it three months to see if it worked, and I noticed a bit of relief. A good place to start would be with a NUCCA doc, which is their acronym for upper cervical specialists.

Try to avoid the narcotics as much as possible. It is a slippery slope. I do have Fiorinal for the killer-headache-from-hell days where I can take two and go to bed. It is sort of like a ramped-up Excedrine, with a little butalbital in it so you don't feel so anxious about the pain that you bang your head on the bathroom mirror.

Hope she finds some of this useful. I have a lifetime more info, but my husband just told me that muscleheads won't read this much.

Good luck.

Herbal wise feverfew, and butterbur work for alot of people.
Vitamins magnesium, and b-2 work for alot of people.

what about SYDOLIL.Hope you find the relief your looking for. MM

TY Tapout's wife! That was a great post. I got them as a teenager and now in my 30's they're back. I always thought mine were hormonal. I've tried everything as well and the only thing that helps me is a drug called Midrin. It's an old shotgun-therapy type of med but it does work. Not too much drowsiness either. Not only is the pain pretty intense but the nausea is rough too. Some foods bring them on, for me, peanuts or onions.

Definitely feel for anyone out there that get's these. One thing is for sure. If you have to ask yourself if you've ever had one, you haven't.

i used to get them a few times a month when i lived at home with my parents. id get them so bad that i got the blind spots, would throw up, and my tongue would go numb and i couldnt think and would often try and say something and actually say something else. like one time i remember sayin i took the movies back but i actually said something about takin the trash out. weird. anyways both my parents smoked a lot and as soon as i moved out (and since i dont smoke) the migraines pretty much just went away. although if im around any kind of cigarette smoke when visiting my parents or somewhere i usually get a migraine that night or the next day.

cigarrette smoke also brings them out in her and onions.

Thanks for all the replys. It is greatly apperciated. Alot of good info is in your post's. I'm sure something within here will work.
