If you use Humulin-R or Novolin-R and inject it IM it has a much faster onset AND clearance time making your "active window" about 5 hours so you can shoot in pre workout and have similar experience as with Humalog but get a little longer dwell time so you can squeeze in a post shake and meal after that , generally y the time your meal is in the active life is coming to an end.
Let's say you train at 3pm
Have a small meals at 2pm , say 25g protein , 25g complex carbs at 10g fat.
Right before you walk into the gym shoot your 10iu Humulin-R and Start sipping you Intra workout shake which has 50g simple carbs (powdered Gatorade is great) and everything you need , you drink this through the 1.5hr or so of training then start sipping your post workout shake on your way home 50g whey isolate and 50g carbs (I like Coco krispies) finish that on your ride home so now with say it 2hr past your shot.
Relax , take a show and make your post workout meal , Something like Lean beef and sweet potatoes this both digest a bit slower 50g protein and 50g Carbs , trace fats from the beef.
By the time you get this meal down it's 3.5-4 hr after your shot and you have covered your "10g per 1IU" insulin needs by 50% , that meal will take over an hr to digest and will keep a steady flow of blood sugar till the insulin I activate.
So now you have safely covered your carb needs and NOT over eaten , you pumped the muscle full of nutrition rich blood for hrs after it was worked.
