Morning Cardio Question...

I would consider myself a advanced beginner bodybuilder. I've placed well in a few county and state shows but still far from most of you guys.

Here is my question. I recently started working with a trainer/nutritionist. For the most part my diet, cardio and training are adequate for the level I want to take this sport. But he recently told me that I am wasting my time doing morning cardio because I am not truly fasted.

I wake up around 6:30-7:00am, I make my morning low carb wrap and eat it while I am doing my 30 minutes of morning cardio. I've been doing this for years. I didn't think my body would process the food within the 20-30 minutes I am doing cardio.

Does the body absorb the nutrients that quickly? Realistically, I am eating on my breakfast wrap for the first 5 minutes of my morning cardio.

Let me know what you guys think.

Thank you

^BUMP, I'd like to hear this one too. One of the more informed folks will be along soon.

This is an interesting question. My gut tells me that you're probably fine doing it this way-it's hard to believe that your body could actually process the food that quickly. I'm curious to see what the more advanced guys have to say about this.

one way to find out, make yourself a bit hypoglycemic, then try certain foods and see how long it takes to stop feeling hypoglycemic.

The only problem I can see would be that you could be interfering with digestive efficiency since bloodflow would be directed toward working muscles.

You need to hire a new trainer/nutritionist who knows what he's talking about.

First, you're hardly going to be digesting and absorbing the nutrients from any food you're eating during your short cardio session. Just look at the time course for fast digesting whey protein on plasma amino acid levels.

Second, even if you ate before doing the cardio, it's not going to make any difference on fat loss (unless perhaps you're at an extremely low body fat level and doing contest prep).

I'd recommend reading Alan Aragon's 3-part article on this topic, **broken link removed**. Alan is a well respected researcher and author of a research review.

And again, don't forget to hire a new trainer/nutritionist. Seriously.

The state you're in wrt being fed or not matters when getting rid of stubborn fat. Otherwise, you're burning calories and you're burning fat by the end of the day assuming your diet is in check.
