I think muscle size, as shelby has stated makes the biggest diff, with a muscle like glutes u need good level of development to show detail and more separation.
I think Shelby and xjpx hit it, because in the past I had good separation but not much in my glutes and hams, this year after doing tons of squats and getting pretty strong at them they grew quite a bit and looked so much better and harder when i thought it was just a genetic thing before. I was wrong. I'm sure muscle maturity plays a big part in it as well.
