This is going to sound bad but...i dont think he will come close to a win. if he gets with the right trainer and gets his conditioning to a somewhat acceptable level its still going to be an ego bruise. that being said this sport is full of criticism. if he does it at least he will have the experience of getting on stage and getting his feet wet when it comes to true contest prep. the WORST case cenario is it is a learning experience. He should not be afraid to try and to fail. not trying is much worse.

just because he wont do well DOES NOT MEAN HE SHOULDNT DO IT! failure is one of the greatest learning tools. if you dont make a mistake you cant learn anything.
5'10, 199 lbs, 14% bf.
waist: 31 inches
Arms: 17 inches
chest/back: 45 inches
legs: 27 inches
he plans to do the show around 180, around 6-8%.
the kid looks like he has built a good base. id have to agree with a lot of the guys here. tell him to lean down, see how he looks, CONSIDER doing the show, then bulk, while keeping as lean as possible.. not too lean.. around 10ish%.
that kid's body looks like my brothers, plus i think ive trained at that gym before... is he your training partner? his initials SJD?

Oh, can't do a show at 8% bodyfat either, unless he's competing in Bikini....
I say that he should do the show, if he diets for Maybe doing the show, he won't do it 100%, it's all or nothing when it comes to dieting, that's the whole point in doing the show, IMO.
He may need something to really push him to be strict with the diet. That's the reason that I did my first show last year, otherwise I wouldn't have stuck with it.
He's still a teen at 17. The teen classes haven't been that though lately, they sure as hell aren't as tough as they were in the 80's and 90's. I remember my older brother competing as a teen in the 80's they had about 20 competitors per class!
Anyway, he looks great for only being 17, and doing his first show, would give him an idea of what the sport is all about and even if he gets blown away, it would make him train that much harder if he is truly meant for this sport. Because face it just about everyone gets a whoopin in the sport sooner or later.
Keep us posted.
